The Association of Residents of Costa Rica (Apdo. 232-1007, San José, (506) 233-8068, email: arcr@casacanada.com, web www.casacanada.net) serves the interests of foreign residents as well as those considering living in Costa Rica. It acts as an advocacy forum and provides a panoply of services to members, including AAA-type road service and legal and insurance services, as well as hosting social events and providing publications of interest.
The Association of National Park Volunteers, or ASVO, (Apdo. 10104, San José 1000, (506) 224-1331) recruits foreign volunteers with appropriate skills to work alongside rangers on a temporary basis. If you can handle basic living for a while and would enjoy applying your skills and energies in a noble cause, give it a try. Work might include digging at an archaeological site, lifeguard duty at a park beach, or protecting nesting marine turtles. Volunteers receive free transportation and lodging. However, you may need to provide your own food, living conditions are rustic, and the work is often hard but very rewarding.
