Costa Ricans like to drink, but they don’t like drunks. Most bars server a good variety of drinks. However local drinks are by far the most popular and the cheapest.
There are several brands of local beer. The most popular, Imperial and Pilsen, are both quite good and have a Mexican beer taste to them. Imperial is national beer and is easily distinguished by the black eagle on the label. Bavaria is Costa Rica’s version of a darker, full bodied, beer but it is a bit lacking. Heineken is also locally made and is sold in many establishments. Imported beers are available but are harder to find. Local beers cost from about $0.60 USD to $3.00 USD in the most expensive bars and hotels.
Wine in not endemic to Costa Rica and thus not really sold, except in specialty stores. Rum is made locally and it competes with some of the best Rums from the Caribbean. The most popular Costa Rica Rum is Ron Centenario but this is on the expensive end since it is Costa Rica’s premier Rum.
