The beautiful province of Cartago is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country. Located in the lush and fertile Central Valley, Cartago attracts plenty of visitors for its tranquil surroundings and rich natural beauty. Cartago city, the provincial capital was the first Spanish settlement in Costa Rica and offers some amazing views of the Volcano Irazu in the distance. Situated at the base of the volcano, this city has many important touring sites such as the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, which is currently home to Costa Rica’s patron saint, ‘La Negrita’ or ‘the Black Virgin.’
Currently, there is just one casino, the Hotel Rio Perlas situated in the Orosí Valley in Cartago; however, plans are on the way to change that. The Thunderbird Resorts Tres Rios project is based in Cartago and will be the first luxury hotel of its kind in the area. This resort will have its own Las Vegas style casino, a spa and health club, an excellent convention center and a private residential community as well. Seeking to cater to the many tourists who come to this region, this resort and casino will be completed in the next few years.
Most Costa Ricans enjoy visiting casinos as they are nice informal places to play in. The Dress code for most casinos is casual and they are not as imposing as the casinos you see in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Minimum bets usually begin at around 500 Colones, which is very affordable for most people. One of the most popular casino games in Costa Rica is ‘Rummy’, which is sort of similar to the game of blackjack. And while some of the rules are similar, others are different, so it is advisable to first see how a few games are played by the locals at the table before you place your bet.
Slots and roulette are also popular casino games in Costa Rica, but they vary from the slot and roulette you are used to playing in Vegas. Similarly other casino games have their own Tico rules, meaning that you will probably need a bit of help ahead of visiting a casino. A good idea would be to make friends with the locals and learn the games.
