San Jose offers a lot of recreational activities and entertainment. An exciting place to visit with excellent hotels and accommodations, top class restaurants, a plethora of museums, cinemas and theaters; this city never sleeps. The nightlife here is exciting and vibrant as well, as San Jose is packed with bars, nightclubs, discos and live music, which goes on till early hours of the morning. An urban metropolis filled with all the modern comforts of life, tall buildings and shopping malls can be found all over.

For those who enjoy gambling and cards, there are around 11 casinos in San Jose City. Some of the popular casinos in San Jose include the Barceló San José Palacio Spa & Casino, the Best Western Irazu and the Hotel Presidente. The Balmoral Hotel, the Casino Club Colonial, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, the Hotel del Ray, the Hotel Radisson Europa, the Hotel Royal Dutch and Casino, the Quality Centro Colon and the Tryp Corobici, also have casinos on their premises also.

A variety of restaurants can be found in San Jose—from the traditional fare to continental cooking, ranging from affordable food to fine dining—there are plenty of eateries that will fall within every budget and satisfy every taste. Most restaurants serve everything from beef and chicken to seafood, even vegetarian dishes. Do try out the local Tico food when you’re in San Jose as it is extremely healthy and nutritious. Rice and beans are the staple diet in Costa Rica.. Casado, gallo pinto and tortillas are popular local foods, and can usually be found in anywhere.

There are numerous bars to choose from in San Jose, ranging from the more modern hangouts for the younger crowd, to classy sophisticated lounges for the trendy. The El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte, is one of the most popular night spots in the city, where both the young and the old converge to have a good time. Chelle’s in downtown San Jose is another well-known bar in the city, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bar Chavelona is one of the oldest bars in the city and is a good place to go if you want to mingle with the locals.

There are quite a few spas in San Jose. An excellent resort spa to visit is the Barceló San José Palacio Spa and Casino, which is located in Sabana Note and has a fitness center and gym. Another good spa in San Jose is close to the airport as well as the center of the city—the Corteza Amarilla Art Lodge & Spa in Santa Ana.
