Rich in natural beauty, the province of Alajuela sits just north of San Jose and is another frequented province by tourists who wish to explore the diverse splendor of Costa Rica. Extending all the way up to Nicaragua, the most noted attraction here has to be the fiery Arenal Volcano, which sits on the province’s western border in the stunning Parque Nacional Volcan Arenal. If you are planning a trip to Alajuela, a visit to the Arenal is well worth your while as on a clear night you are treated to a fantastic fireworks display.

Alajuela City is the capital of the province and is located just a stone’s throw away from San Jose City. Located 20 km northwest of the capital, this city is a great place to use as base camp while explore the neighboring region. A laidback place, more affordable and inexpensive hotels can be found in Alajuela with a price range to suit every budget. Just outside of town are two fantastic resort and spa hotels, where once can relax amid gorgeous lush surroundings.

Head west of Alajuela to the towns of Atenas, Grecia, Sarchi, Naranjo and Zarcero, which are picturesque settlements along the way. Set amidst striking coffee plantations, these places offer a number of hotels, lodges, villas, inns and cabins to stay at. A lovely way to spend a few days away from city life, this area is also known for its unique arts and crafts.

From Zarcero, you can also visit the popular Parque Nacional Volcan Poas with its dramatic scenery and dwarf cloud forest. And while camping is not allowed in the park, there are plenty of hotels and accommodations in the area where one can stay at.

An easy day trip from Alajuela is the Arenal Volcano National Park that lies in the Cordillera de Tilaran Mountain Range. When in the area you can find accommodations in the towns of Ciudad Quesada or San Carlos and La Fortuna which are ideal places to stay at, if you wish to escape the more touristy crowds in Arenal. From La Fortuna you can easily get a good view of the Volcan Arenal in all its glory. Nearby here are some wonderful hot springs as well, here you can soothe your troubles away.
