Borinquen Resort Hotel Pool
One of the most beautiful regions in Costa Rica, Heredia offers tourists a wealth of nature based activities to enjoy. Situated just a few miles from the capital of San Jose, this small province is renowned for its lush coffee plantations and incredible national parks. Home to an abundance of verdant forestation, incredible raging rivers and majestic volcanoes, Heredia is a real treat for nature lovers.

The most important city of this province is Heredia, the regional capital. An elegant and pretty town, Heredia sits just 10 km from San Jose, making it a frequently visited destination on the tourist map. Many visitors who are looking to escape the hustle of city life often come here, to get away from the chaos of San Jose. Another reason why so many people come to Heredia is because the National University or Universidad Nacional is located on the east side of town.

Accommodations in Heredia are aplenty with hotels and lodgings to suit every budget. One reason for the wide availability of budget rooms in Heredia is because of the influx of university students. If you prefer, you can also stay in the neighboring town of Barva, which offers tourists a more slower pace of life. Roughly 3 miles north of Heredia, this township has no hotels in town itself. However, just a few miles outside Barva you can find some truly wonderful lodges and mountain resorts to stay at.

From Barva, you can head on to the beautiful Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, home to the massive Barva Volcano. This park with its thick forests and green pastures is a wonderful place to go hiking in.

Also worth visiting in Heredia is Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. This picturesque village located close to Nicaragua has a range of accommodations to stay at. A former key port in the country, this town is now an adventure destination for nature lovers and thrill seekers. If you like, you can also stay in one of the many exclusive lodges and cabins to be found along the way here. These places are wonderful way to get an up close and personal view of this province’s natural beauty.
