Puntarenas is the largest province in Costa Rica extending all the way up from the border of Panama in the south to Guanacaste province in the north. What makes visiting Puntarenas so special is its diverse landscape, which offers tourists a plethora of activities to enjoy. You have a choice of visiting places like the cloud forests of Monteverde in the north or the surfing mecca of Pavones down south.

In order to better explore this province, a good idea is to divide it into north and south zones. North Puntarenas stretches down to Dominical, while South Puntarenas starts from Sierpe and the Osa Peninsula. Most people who tour North Puntarenas usually begin their journey from the administrative capital of the province, Puntarenas City. Offering not much in the way of attractions, this city is best used as a base camp for exploring the region. Accommodations here are plentiful with many budget and mid-range hotels found allover the place.

From Puntarenas you can head up in to the cloud forests of Monteverde and Santa Elena, which present a mystical and magical appearance. With many of the treetops here hidden way up in the clouds, the scenery is quite breathtaking. Accommodations can be found in the nearby villages as well as along the way to these incredible tourist attractions. Inns, lodges, hotel rooms and cabins can be rented out at affordable rates. There are also a number of top-end all inclusive ecolodges in the area as well.

For beach lovers who want to spend some time in the sun, hop across from Puntarenas via Paquera by ferry to the Nicoya Peninsula and the beach towns of Playa Curu, Montezuma, Cabuya, Mal Pais and Santa Theresa. Both Mal Pais and Santa Theresa are top notch surf destinations and offer the widest variety of hotels and accommodations in the area. Hotels here range from the overnight B&B’s to luxury resorts and cabinas.

Along the Central Pacific Coast you can find a number of hotels and resorts that are both affordable as well as expensive. Depending on your travel budget, you have a wide array of choices. One of the best places to stay at in this area has to be Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Nearby the renowned Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, this part of the province has a number of budget hotels and top class resorts.

For a surfer vacation here, head to the towns of Dominical and Jaco which offer inexpensive hotels and hostels to stay at.
