South Puntarenas is the perfect place for those who wish to experience a more wilder and natural Costa Rica vacation. Home to the lush Osa Peninsula, verdant agricultural lowlands and remote isolated beaches, there are plenty of things to do and places to see out here. This part of the country is also home the gorgeous Corcovado National Park, boasting the title of being one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. The habitat of a wealth of indigenous flora and fauna species, South Puntarenas is a first rate ecotourism destination.

If you enjoy roughing it out on your vacations then there are plenty of good ecolodges found throughout this area. However, if you are a creature of comfort, there are a number of good hotels in the Sierpe and Drake Bay area. To get to Drake Bay, you need to catch a boat from the town of Sierpe via a river sharing the same name. A tourist town, Sierpe has a number of hotels in the area and along the river banks.

Accommodations are plentiful in Drake Bay, but they do not come very cheap as many of these places offer all-inclusive vacation packages with tours of the local sights. Also keep in mind that Drake Bay has no running electricity which means after dark there are no lights. If you plan on coming here, make sure you make a reservation as this town is used as a main base camp for exploring the region. Most room rates here also include your three meals for the day. There are however, a few affordable hotels and lodges in Drake Bay.

While touring the Parque Nacional Corcovado, there are plenty of lodges and cabins that you can stay at. These places are all inclusive and offer all the services and amenities of any first-rate hotel or resort. A cheaper alternative is to stay in the town of Puerto Jimenez located in the south of the Osa Peninsula, you will find a good variety of more affordable hotels here. Extremely bustling during the Easter season and on dry season weekends, it is best to make an advance reservation. The towns of Cabo Matapalo and Carate are also a good option to stay at if you wish to escape the holiday crowds.

Another town worth visiting in South Puntarenas is Golfito, a former bustling banana port. Offering some good fishing opportunities, the accommodations here are abundant and range from the affordable to the expensive. Zancudo and Pavones are two more towns in Southern Costa Rica that also worth a trip to. Pavones is a surfing haven, while Zancudo has a nice beach where one can chill out and relax. There are plenty of affordable as well as luxurious accommodations out here.
