Hammocks on Mal Pais Beach
Although each of Costa Rica’s seven provinces is considered beautiful, the province of Heredia is often regarded as the most beautiful province in the country of Costa Rica. This is because the landscape is truly stunning with lush coffee plantations, volcanoes, superb national parks, breathtaking cascades and raging rivers all found here. The perfect destination for nature lovers, staying in Heredia is a wonderful way to enjoy a different side of Costa Rica.

Vacation rentals can be found all over the province. However, your best bet to finding affordable and inexpensive accommodations is in the provincial capital of Heredia City. Founded in 1705, Heredia City, or the 'City of the Flowers', is just a few miles from San Jose and the airport. An idyllic place to spend a quiet few days, Heredia is also the home of the National University or Universidad Nacional which sits in the eastern end of town. Lately known for its production of microchips, Heredia has now become the high-tech capital of Costa Rica. Vacation rentals here are quite affordable mainly because of this town’s sizable student popualtion.

If you prefer, just a couple of kilometers from Heredia sits the small colonial town of Barva, a good option to stay at if you plan on visiting the extraordinary Braulio Carrillo National Park. Though most of the rentals and lodges here are located around the outskirts of town, staying here offers tourists some incredibly spectacular views from their balconies and windows.

The vacation rentals here are perfect for the entire family with sizeable rooms, equipped kitchens, internet and TV access, running hot and cold water and a variety of other amenities.

For a more adventurous vacation head up north to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and its surrounding area. A fantastic place to come white water rafting, this town is also known for its ecotourism and wildness adventures. Accommodations and vacation rentals can be found all over the place here and range from the basic room and board to more impressive lodges on the outlying areas of town especially along the road to La Virgen. Close to the La Selva Protected Zone, this region offers plenty of hiking and trekking opportunities as well.
