Hammocks on Mal Pais Beach
Located in the lush Central Valley, the province of Cartago offers a wonderful respite for the weary traveler. A charming and scenic region, you can find the first capital of Costa Rica located here. Cartago City has the privilege of not only being Costa Rica’s initial capital, but also has the distinction of being the first Spanish settlement in the country. Established in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado, this city is perhaps most famous for La Negrita or ‘The Black Virgin.’ Visited annually by thousands of pilgrims from all across the country, Cartago is an amazing holiday destination.

Vacation rentals in Cartago City vary from the expensive to the affordable and can be found throughout town. They are the ideal to stay in if your wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of living in San Jose. Great for families with kids and couples, staying here is a fabulous option as the weather is great and the surroundings magnificent. Peaceful and quiet, you can explore the rest of the province from here. Cartago is also nearby the Volcan Irazu and the spectacular Lankester Gardens.

If you prefer, you can also lease a vacation rental in the Orosi Valley. Verdant and fertile, this valley is a wonderful escape amidst nature at its most pristine. The air here is fresh and clean with thriving coffee plantations found all over the place. Offering excellent views of the adjoining countryside, the vacation rentals here are first class.

For a more adventurous vacation head on up to Turrialba and its neighboring areas. A terrific town to visit as it is close to the Guayabo National Park, staying at Turrialba gives you a chance to see rural Costa Rica. Also found nearby is the marvelous Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba with some superb white water rafting in the area as well. Cabins, lodges and vacation rentals can be found all over the region with all the modern facilities and amenities.
