One of the biggest and most cosmopolitan cites in Central America, San Jose is the heart of the metropolitan area in Costa Rica. A lively capital with plenty of everything, staying here is exciting for those who love the urban life. Fast paced with plenty of traffic, busy markets, restaurants and people, San Jose offers something for everyone.

The ideal base camp for your vacation, San Jose has some of the best accommodations money can buy. Rentals, condos, apartments, villas and vacation homes, this city has it all. Living here also means easy access to banks, hospitals and ATMs. The transportation hub of the country, staying in San Jose allows you to get to wherever you need with little to no hassle.

To stay close to where all the action is, your best bet is to lease a vacation rental near downtown. Full of activity, this part of San Jose is close to most of the city’s major tourist attractions. Also just a stone’s throw away from the Juan Santamaria International Airport, living here means you are provided with all the modern conveniences and amenities. Hot and cold running water, laundry services and equipped kitchens are just some of many benefits of vacation rentals here.

If you are looking for some place more quiet then head out of main downtown into the suburbs of La Sabana, Rohrmoser, Escazu, Los Yoses, San Pedro and San Antonio de Belen. Beautiful in their own right, these suburban areas are located just 15 to 20 minutes from downtown, but offer tourists with a more tranquil reprieve. Spacious and well maintained the vacation rentals in these San Jose suburbs range from the posh to the affordable. Do keep in mind though that you will probably need to make a rental reservation at least 3-6 months in advance if you are visiting Costa Rica during peak tourist season, as the city can get pretty crowded around this time. Christmas week and the week before Easter are also considered as top tourist periods of the year.

For a more tranquil vacation, you can stay outside the city in the more quaint towns of the province such as San Gerardo de Dota, San Ignacio, Ciudad Colon and San Isidro.
