Leatherback Turtle's First Steps
Being the capital of Costa Rica, there are a number of non-profit organizations located in San Jose city. Most of these organizations have their headquarters based in San Jose, while they work on various projects all across Costa Rica. From protecting the rainforests to safeguarding the wealth of flora and fauna to community building groups, these non-profit organizations work for a wide variety of causes.

There are more than 20 non-profit organizations based in San Jose at the moment, some of the popular ones; APREFLORAS or the Association for Protection of Wildlife, ASCONA or the Caribbean Conservation Corps, Earth Council and the Organization for Tropical Studies.

APREFLORAS or the Association for Protection of Wildlife is located in Moravia, San Jose. This non-profit organization organizes volunteer patrols in Costa Rica’s wilderness areas to report on any illegal activities conducted like unlawful logging or hunting.

ASCONA or the Caribbean Conservation Corps sits in San Pedro, San Jose and works to protect the turtle population along the Caribbean Coast. ASCONA sends volunteers to assist in research conservation projects for turtles as well as on patrols. This non-profit organization accepts donations.

The Earth Council is situated in downtown San Jose. An international non-profit organization, the Earth Council was established as a direct result of the Earth Summit held in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1992. This council is dedicated to supporting and empowering local communities. It helps villages and towns all across the country build a secure and sustainable future for the people who live in the region and for future generations as well.

The Organization for Tropical Studies or OTP is based in San Pedro, San Jose. A non-profit organization, it maintains biological research facilities and lodges in various tropical environments all across Costa Rica.
