Leatherback Turtle's First Steps
The province of Cartago is known for its superb natural beauty and tranquil surroundings. A wonderful place to live and work in, with easy accessibility to San Jose, this region also has the distinction of playing host to the first Spanish settlement in Costa Rica. Cartago is home to the Guayabo National Monument. The region of Cartago is also home to one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica, this province also offers some of the best river rafting in the country.

There are a number of non-profit organizations in Cartago that range from conservation groups to volunteer programs. These organizations offer a great service to the local communities in the province as they help build schools, train teachers, protect the environment and help in other community building projects.

Located in the village of Tuis, Turrialba, in Cartago province is the Christian Immersion Spanish Academy or CISA. This non-profit organization offers Spanish lessons and classes, and in return the people who study here participate in various activities such as helping the local communities in any way they can.

Cross-Cultural Solutions is another non-profit organization in Cartago, which allows volunteers from other countries to help the locals. This organization is involved in various community based activities that let you work to help the villagers who live in and around the Cartago area.

The Costa Rica Volunteer and Cultural Enrichment Program lets you work on various projects including adult and youth education. This non-profit organization also helps communities in recycling, gardening, building, helping orphans and working with various indigenous communities.
