Leatherback Turtle's First Steps
A top notch eco-tourist destination, South Puntarenas is ideal for those who want to spend plenty of time outdoors. This part of Costa Rica is home to many lush dense rainforests and a wealth of wildlife making is a wonderful place to see and explore. If you don’t mind roughing it a bit to get here, South Puntarenas is home to some of the most amazing plant and animal life in world. The Osa Peninsula here is known as one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. For adventures lovers, there are some excellent surfing opportunities out here as well as some top notch diving, snorkeling and sportfishing.

While there are not many non-profit organizations based in South Puntarenas, there are several concerns all over Costa Rica that work to protect the precious environment of this region. Several conservation agencies have branch offices located here which are actively involved in stopping illegal logging, planting new trees, protecting endangered species and preventing poaching.

Once such organization is the Corcovado Foundation which works to stop illegal hunting and logging especially in the Osa Peninsula and in the Parque Nacional Corcovado. This NGO works in collaboration with the Costa Rican government and several other agencies to protect Costa Rica's national parks and nature reserves in this part of the country by places volunteers to work alongside local officials. The Piedras Blancas National Park, the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, the Isla del Caño Biological Reserve and Golfito Wildlife Refuge are also looked after by this organization.

Another non-profit NGO working in South Puntarenas as well as all over Costa Rica is AVSO. This non-profit NGO not only helps to protect and safeguard Costa Rica’s national parks, but also looks after threatened environments. ASVO is based in South Puntarenas in addition to other provinces in Cost Rica and also helps build homes for poor families, provides vocational training programs for street children as well as works with local and governmental officials to help improve the overall quality of life of the poorer segments of society.
