Just 11 km north of San Jose, the beautiful province of Heredia is a fantastic place to escape to. A great region to enjoy nature, this province offers tourists a pleasant and serene atmosphere to relax in. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful provinces in Costa Rica because of its abundant natural beauty, Heredia is also home to the incredible Braulio Carrillo National Park as well as a number of gorgeous nature reserves.

Visit the picturesque towns of Heredia, Santo Domingo, Barva and San Isidro, before you head on up to the Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. From here go north to the port town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and visit the La Selva Protected Zone and the Rara Avis nature reserve along the way.

An excellent destination for nature lovers, Heredia offers plenty of bird watching opportunities all across the province, as well as some great hiking trails up the Volcan Barva. There is also a superb rainforest aerial tram that runs inside the Braulio Carrillo National Park, which gives you the chance to take a unique ride through the rainforest.

Renting a car and traveling around Heredia is a wonderful opportunity to go where you want to, when you want to. A rental car also lets you visit those places that are not on the tourist map. Ideal for the adventurous traveler, renting a car in Costa Rica is not that expensive as many car rental agencies can be found all over the place. However, it is a good idea to book your car in advance as there is just one car rental agency in the town of Heredia, the provincial capital. If you like, you can also rent a car from San Jose, but beware of rental agencies charging you a drop off fee to deliver your car to your hotel.

If you are considering visiting Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and its adjacent areas, a good idea would be to rent a four wheel drive as the roads in this part of the province are not always in the best of shape.
