The former capital of Costa Rica, Cartago lies just a short drive away east of San Jose. A quaint colonial city, it is the perfect place from where you can explore and discover the stunning Central Valley. With a pleasant wonderful climate and tranquil atmosphere, this province is the ideal place to rest and relax amid some of the most stunning backdrops in the country.

Though there are no car rental agencies in Cartago, you can easily rent a car from San Jose and drive out here yourself. The roads leading to Cartago are in good condition and make driving here a fantastic experience with so much to see along the way. The ideal region for a day trip, there are a number of interesting and fascinating places to see in Cartago such as the Volcano Irazu and Volcano Turrialba, the Lankaster Gardens, the lush Orosi Valley, the Monumento Nacional Guayabo and the Rios Reventazón and Pacuare.

Home to the first Spanish settlers in Costa Rica, this province also has a number of impressive churches that are worth visiting as well. The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, the Iglesia de Nuetsra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion ruins and the Iglesia de San Jose Orosi are a must see when in Cartago.

An easy and hassle free way to get around, renting a car gives you the opportunity to not only travel at your own pace, but also lets you enjoy a more authentic Costa Rica experience. Many car rental agencies also deliver your car to your hotel, which means that you do not have to pick it up yourself. And while some rental agencies do have a ‘drop off’ fee, many companies also you deliver your car fee of cost.

Before you rent a car be sure to check it thoroughly, so as to avoid any car scams. Rent you car from a reliable agency and make sure that you read your rental contract carefully before you sign on the dotted line.
