Exotic and vibrant, the province of Limon is worlds apart from the rest of Costa Rica. Here lush tropical jungles open up on to beautiful sandy beaches, creating an almost utopian like atmosphere where one can simply sit back and relax. A treat to visit, touring Limon is an experience to remember for all who come here.
For most tourists getting to Limon is rather simple; fly into the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose and then catch a domestic flight via Nature Air to Puerto Limon, the provincial capital. One of the 3 main airports in this region, landing in Puerto Limon is great as this city is the ideal base camp for exploring the rest of Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. Nature Air usually flies into Puerto Limon from the Pavas (Tobias Bolanos) Airport in San Jose.
You can also get to Puerto Limon via cruise ship, as this city is an important port in the area. If you like, you can drive out to here as Puerto Limon is just a two and a half hour journey from San Jose City. Some 6.5 km away, you can take Highway 32 past the towns of Guapiles, Guacimo and Siquirres to get to Puerto Limon. Once in the city you can find plenty of cabs to take you to the destination of your choice.
If you plan on visiting either the Barra del Colorado National Park or the Tortuguero National Park, you best bet is to catch a domestic flight to either of these nature reserves. Wild and swampy, there are no proper roads leading to both of these places. If you like you can take a boat ride upriver from Moin to get to these parks.
Driving around Limon is excellent as the roads here are slow and the traffic is mellow. You will mostly see scooters and bicycles used especially in the southern end of the province, where the lifestyle is more chilled out and laidback. Home to some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches; touring this part of the province is a pure delight.
You can also catch a bus and travel around Limon, as it is an easy, cheap and comfortable way to get around. Buses leave regularly from Puerto Limon to Cahuita, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Bribri, Sixaola and Manzanillo. Taxis are also available along with rental cars especially if you are traveling with your family or a large group of people.
