Playa San Josecito, South Drake Bay
Hugely popular, North Puntarenas is one of the top tourist destinations in Costa Rica. Here you can find plenty of beach resort towns and some of the most beautiful national parks in the country. The ideal place to relax, chill out and enjoy the sun, this region is a haven for surfers and sports fishermen.

Getting around North Puntarenas is actually very easy as the roads here are well paved with proper signposts. A fairly hassle-free region to navigate through as you drive along the coast, you will find some wonderful palm-oil plantations and stunning beach vistas along the way. A good place to begin your journey would be from the town of Puntarenas, a former major shipping port. Also the provincial capital, Puntarenas sits just 110 km west of San Jose and serves up some of the best seafood in the area. Centrally located along the Central Pacific Coast, from Puntarenas you can head up north to the Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forests or if you, like head west to the beach resorts of Mal Pais, Santa Theresa, Montezuma and Tambor. South of Puntarenas you will find the surfing hotspots of Jaco, Playa Hermosa and Dominical as well as the gorgeous Manuel Antonio National Park and the Parque Nacional Carara.
A bus the most cheapest and effective way to traveling along the Central Pacific Coast, with regular stops at all the key tourist towns in the region. If you are heading to Mal Pais and Santa Theresa on the Nicoya Peninsula, you will have to first catch a ferry from Puntarenas to either Paquera or Playa Naranjo and then take the bus onwards to your destination. If you like you can also rent a car and drive out here, as the ferries carry both passengers as well as vehicles.

Rental cars are a great way to travel around this province as well as they can help you escape the more touristy areas in favor of some beautiful isolated stretches of sun, surf and sand. A great way to see this large province at your own pace, you can hire a rental car in San Jose and then drive out here. Taxis are readily available in most major towns in the North Puntarenas area and are a good way to get around especially if you are traveling with your family or a large group of friends.

Bike and scooter rentals are also very popular in North Puntarenas with several rental stores and offices found up and down the coast.
