Hotel Dorothy had a friendly staff although I haven't been there since 2001. The room price was almost free which gave me extra cash to take daily tours gladly arrainged by the hotel staff. I stayed about 4 nights and did tours (adventures)daily. Definately nothing fancy about this hotel but my only needs are a clean place to sleep with my own bathroom. Great place for young travelers with limited money to spend. Close to Arenal Volcano, Fortuna Falls and some good local food. If you like to save money and are not picky about your hotel room, Hotel Dorothy is an awesome place to stay.

This is a very simple place, nothing fancy. It is however very clean and the people there were very nice. I am going back in Decembrer after 4 1/2 months in various parts of C.R. For the price I was shocked how nice it is. terry

though staff was pleasant enough to chat with casually, overall experience was awful. we planned to stay 2 nights at dorothy, and also attempted to make arrangements for a tour to a national park through the hotel. we were initially told we could pay with credit, and then were pressured to pay cash for our room, and the tour plans kept changing and nothing was finalized very late in the evening the day before our tour was to take place, so we canceled and at that point could not even book through another company. we had plenty of great hostel experiences on other legs of our trip, but hotel dorothy was NOT one of them. there are plenty of other more pleasant rooms closer to the main street of la fortuna, run by honest locals who seem more concerned with giving you a good feel for their country than making a buck off of you any way they can.
