Bay Island Cruises has been dedicated for more than 18 years to the maritime tourism in the Central Pacific Area of Costa Rica, in the Province of Puntarenas, Nicoya’s Gulf. This is a precious archipelago where there are located beautiful islands, being a sanctuaries for sea birds which are the main attraction in our crossing, until arriving to our destination “The Heavenly Tortuga Island”.

This tour was the prime example of FALSE ADVERTISING. The entire time I thought we had signed up for the Calypso Cruise, but after this experience I can definitely see the vast difference, and mistake for that matter. Right off the bat, the tour guide did not come inside our hotel lobby to greet us (every tour has done this so far), so we had to run out in the rain to see if it was our tour bus. Inside, the guide (named Sebastian) explains how the bus microphone is broken and had to go through the aisles saying the same thing 2-3 times (plus, bilingual translation). I reached up to see if the light or a/c duct above my seat worked, and of course, it did not. We get to our first stop for breakfast, and the guide was more concerned with charging people for extras and catching people who tried to get seconds. We get back on the bus after a disappointing breakfast and board the catamaran at Puntarenas. Upon entering, I could not believe how small and "ghetto" it was, plus, they overbooked the damn thing to the point where people had to STAND during the ride because there were no seats. It was not what the boat looked like in the brochure and the fact that I had to stand made me even more seasick. I already noticed how bad the rain was getting and wondered why they would still take us out to sea. After about 30 minutes, the boat began to rock so much and eventually our terribly small lifeboat breaks off from the catamaran. Being the unprofessional crew they were, one man rushes out, slips on the boat floor (made of slippery wood), and swims out to catch it. This involves us STOPPING the boat out in a storm just to save the piece of junk!! They threw out our food and propane and tied it back.. completely unnecessary and caused us to turn around and head back to Puntarenas (when we were already 5 minutes to the island). The weather was so bad on the way back people started throwing up, glasses started breaking, and the nerve of our tour guide to tell a couple of older ladies in a rude tone to calm down in Spanish!! People began putting on lifevests, which were so inadequate and flimsy in the case we were going to capsize. The whole time the crew tried calling some unknown person from a cell phone which obviously could not get signal out there. There absolutely was no radar or satellite navigation system advertised! All they had was a flare gun, which they didn't even shoot when we came into proximity with a huge cargo ship!! Inside, the bartender accidentally puts off the fire extinguisher causing another uproar because its fumes diffused throughout the inside of the boat. Everytime something broke in the bar, a crew member would go back a check on it in case it was an expensive bottle. They were more concerned with their money than the safety of their own passengers. They should have known that the storm was coming by checking weather and coastal reports in advance, but they wanted to take a chance and get as much money as possible before canceling any tours. Come on! Even after almost killing us, they were still keeping tab of how many beers each person was ordering to charge them. The doors of the boat wouldn't even close properly, a crew member was constantly wiping the boat floor with a rag on his feet, the tour guide never giving us real information and was terribly rude to everyone!! The crew members were unprofessional and perverts, to be quite honest. It was simply appalling to see a couple of crew members staring me down like meat instead of manning the damn ship!! This will probably go down as one of the worst experiences of my life and I am going to suggest that no one even considers going on this tour unless want their life to be in danger. This company either seriously needs to change its management or just stop giving tours altogether. If this were to happen in America, one word: LAWSUIT.
