In north-eastern Costa Rica lies Tortuguero National Park, a place characterized by old growth rainforests and stunning stretches of shimmering blue Caribbean Sea. By the Park is Laguna Lodge Tortuguero, an ideal eco-tourism destination for families and anyone who considers themselves a nature – and especially a turtle – lover.

The Lodge has been contributing to the local community and educating guests about the biodiversity of region since the 1990s and is uniquely situated on a 650-foot-wide stretch of land that is flanked by the Caribbean Sea and a lagoon. Access to the area is only possible by small plane or boat. Once at the Lodge, guests can enjoy a wide range of amenities and activities while surrounded by the sounds of the sea.

The unique location allows guests to experience jungle and tropical forest habitats along with wetlands, rivers and lakes. The National Park protects 405 bird species, 160 mammal species and 52 fresh water fish species. During a visit to the Lodge, guests can experience humid tropical, humid premontane and tropical montane forest types while having access to a 5km stretch of beach along the sea.

Turtle-loving guests of Laguna Lodge Tortuguero will be thrilled to view leatherback sea turtles, hawksbill turtles and green sea turtles in their natural habitat. Additionally, the Lodge organizes educational nesting tours July to October and hatching tours September to November.

A highlight of a trip to Laguna Lodge is a guided boat tour through the canals of Tortuguero National Park, where you can marvel at the exotic flora and fauna from the water. When you are not exploring the botanical garden or watching the jungle wake up during the Nature Awakening Tour, take time to enjoy the two pool areas and savor Costa Rican cuisine during buffet style meals in the open-air seating area.

Access to the nearby village of Tortuguero is possible during a guided tour that informs guests about hunting and fishing traditions of the locals while also telling the story of nature preservation in the area. A stay at Laguna Lodge Tortuguero is a unique way to experience both the remarkable forest and sea landscapes, along with the culture, of beautiful Costa Rica.

"Our experience was wonderful. This place is immaculate, simple and beautiful. Loved it, especially when the rains came in the jungle at 2 AM and lasted for about an hour. It was peaceful and pleasant. The young lady at the desk was very helpful in helping me place a phone call with a card I had bought in San Jose. I was having a problem but she kept trying until she got the call through. We loved the Laguna Lodge and would recommend staying there. "

"This was our second stop on a five stop two week tour of Costa Rica. Of all of the places that we went, this was the most rustic of all, but the very best of all for wildlife. I would go back in a minute. we were there in early March of 2007 and loved it. Laguna Lodge is not a luxury resort but still nice for Costa Rica! I would not miss a boat trip, as this is the very best part of all! here is a link to some of the images that I shot while there, you will need to cut and paste each link as they are broken but certainly worth the time to look!

Do yourself a favor and visit this wonderful National park. and Laguna Lodge is not a bad place to stay!"
