Makanda By the Sea is 12 acres of sanctuary, 100 meters above the ocean. All of Makanda's Villas and Studios have been carefully placed in the botanical rainforest gardens with spectacular views of the sixty mile coastline. It is truly a haven for the adventurist seeking relief from the controlled environs of modern life.
Makanda by the Sea is the ideal location for visitors wishing to experience Costa Rica's natural splendor and variety while enjoying the comforts of first-class jungle lodging. All of the Villas are contoured into the jungle and descending mountain terrain with the abruptly inclining hillsides allowing dramatic ocean views from all locations.
In July 1985, Makanda by the Sea was started by the designer and owner, Joe McNichols. Inspired by his dream, Makanda has been built in balance with it's natural surroundings. Using nature as the backdrop, the contemporary architecture's openness allows the rich tropical flora to become a part of the living environment.
At Makanda by the Sea you will find a number of ways of keeping comfortable on even the hottest of tropical days. The geometrically designed infinity pool has over four thousand square feet of deck space and is perched on a fourty-five degree hillside.
Spacious viewing decks reach into the jungle canopy, bringing animal life within arms reach. Enjoy delicious appetizers as the sun sets among clouds, sizzling as it sinks below the liquid horizon, or sipping on a cool tropical drink while soaking in the jacuzzi is enhanced by the evening's cool breezes and spectacular colors.
From our infinity pool, follow the passage of monkeys, sloths, coati mundis, racoons and other jungle life as they wind their way through the surrounding rainforest. Or, unwind in the jacuzzi while the wildlife watches you!

Accommodations at Makanda by the Sea
Large Villa
The Large Villa offers Villa 1 and Studios 2, 3, and 4. It is unique in that these rooms may remain private, or may be interconnected in various combinations (to accommodate up to 8 guests) by way of gardens, patios and stairways. All rooms are fully equipped to accommodate guests needs as a group, or independently, and all offer private entrances.
Villa 1
Villa 1 is one thousand square feet with a large Japanese garden, vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods, and an impressive open air design. Villa 1 is furnished with a king size bed, large wrap around sofa, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player, hair dryer and much more. The hammock and carefully placed ceiling fans will keep you comfortable while enjoying on-shore breezes and the spectacular view.
Studios 2 and 4
Studios 2 and 4 are located below and to either side of Villa 1. They both feature vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, king size bed, large sofa, dining area, cable tv, cd player, hair dryer, private balcony with chairs, and a small Japanese garden.
Studio 3
Studio 3 is located directly below Villa 1, between Studios 2 and 4. It features a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, king size bed, large sofa, dining area, air conditioning, cable tv, cd player, hair dryer, and much more. Enjoy a fabulous view from your spacious balcony with chairs.
Villa 5, Villa 6 and Villa 10
The other Villas 5, Villa 6, and Villa 10, are set in the rainforest along the mountainside, and have their own private Japanese gardens. As with most of our rooms, expansive bi-fold doors open onto large terraces, making nature part of the home. From each private terrace to the king size beds, the closeness of the jungle is always present. From the fully equipped kitchens to the comfortable bathrooms, rainforest and ocean views keep your eyes fixed on the beauty out your windows at all times. These Villas with their vaulted ceilings, large wrap around sofas, hand-crafted tiles and exotic hardwoods add just the right touch to make your stay in the jungle one of elegance.
Villa 7
Villa 7 is nestled into the jungle mountainside uniquely hidden by the pool and perfect for monkey sighting. It is a one bedroom suite, offering a separate bedroom with a king size bed, and a glass enclosed living area with a large wrap around sofa. It also features a spacious dining area, full kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player, hair dryer, and much more. This unit is air conditioned for your comfort, and has it's own private terrace with chairs and a hammock.
Villa 8
Villa 8 is a unit of nine hundred and fifty square feet with a vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods and a large Japanese garden. This Villa is our only unit furnished with two side by side queen size beds. It also features a fully equipped kitchen, telephone, a large wrap around sofa, cable tv, cd player, hairdryer and is air conditioned for your comfort. The dining area is located on the spacious terrace, along with chairs and a hammock.
Studio 9 & Studio 11
Bask in the luxury of Studio 9 and Studio 11 as you relax in your hammock on the wide terrace. King size beds, large sofas, and fully equipped kitchenettes assure your continued comfort, all while enjoying the breathtaking ocean and rainforest views. They feature air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, dining area, a king size bed, large sofa, cable tv, cd player, hair dryer, and much more. There also boasts a large terrace with chairs and a hammock.
