I have stayed at the Best Western Downtown many times and have always recieved great service. The staff is friendly and very helpful. It is true that the nieghborhood is a little rough at night but hotel security is on top of things. The hotel is within walking distance of Teatro Nacional and the museums.

The hotel is located in a tough part of the city, there are vagrants laying on the streets, there is drug and drinking activity outside the hotel, do not plan on staying here and leaving the hotel unless you have a taxi or bus tour.
My cell phone disappeared from my hotel room, and the staff said there was nothing that could be done.
A much better choice would be the Best Western Irazu, a truly beautiful setting and away from the city blight.
