Don't rent from them. They have no affiliation with Avis in the USA. I went there June 2011. I rented car for 9 days. Was quoted $275 without insurance. When the car was returned, I was charged $700! They inspected the car and said there was a damaged rear light. When I looked at it, it looked as if it had been damaged for a longtime and it was the light on the trunk, Not the actual rear light. They told me if I didn't take insurance that they would charge me $1,000 for the repair! When I got back to the states, I called into Avis about it and they said that they have no control of what happens overseas. That they are independently run, they purchase the franchise name but do not always follow their policies. So wrong! Beware. Also they try to charge for extra drivers. I am guessing other rental car companies do this, I recommend only one person driving the entire trip otherwise expect about $15.99 per person per day charge.

These people are thieves, I had a confirmed price with Avis International for $450 for two weeks, when I went to pick up the car they tried to charge me $1750.00. I rented from Budget instead and I have reported them to Avis Cororate HQ. I found two other tourists who had the same experience, they give Avis a bad name.

Online booking system allows one to opt out of liability insurance. This insurance is required by Costa Rican law. Avis is deliberately deceiving customers by allowing them to book cars online for cheap rates, then price gouging them with this mandatory $18.99/day insurance upon arrival!

We were told one price and when we arived we were told a much higher price for the rental becouse thay were out of the car that we had ordered and thay would not use the insurance coverage that our master card would cover. This is not reguler practice in Costa Rica we have delt with other rental corporations there and have never had a problem.I would avoid Avis , There is alot of better rental corporations out there.

We rented from Avis in mid October 2011. Upon arrival, we were told that our online rental agreement price was not valid because we didn't agree to the liability insurance clause. We did not do this because our credit card provided this service. This apparently is not good enough for costa rica and you will have to pay at least $18 a day more than you planned. This was not the bad part...just the annoying part. When we did the initial walk-around of the car, we pointed out damages and the guy helping us said it was normal wear and tear and we shouldn't worry about it. Well when we went to return the car, the same guy checked us back in. He didn't inspect the car, he just took our paper work, looked it over and said "oh one more thing.". He walked out to the small, old dent we pointed out and said "this is going to be a problem." The scratch had clearly been there for a long time. We absolutely did not dent the car and would take responsibility if we did. The guy told us it was our job to mark down dents and since we didn't, it was our fault. He even had the nerve to tell us that even if he noticed a dent in the car, it wasn't his responsibility to mark it down. We are now being charged more than our rental agreement amount (not including the up-charge for insurance) as well as being charged to repair the dent. We asked to see the previous records on the vehicle and they found one with no marks to indicate dents even though the car clearly had other dents on it. Some were marked when we picked up the car...just not the one we pointed out. It is a scam. If you rent from them please make sure you take the initiative to mark everything you see no matter now minor it may seem. If at all possible, avoid Avis like the plague. They are slimy and corrupt.
