I have never before been inspired to write a review of a place I have been, but this was one of the most enjoyable travel experiences of my life.
After traveling 14 hours from NYC by jet/tiny plane/jeep/outboard motor boat, we pulled up, exhausted, to a dock. There was a young woman in shorts catching the lines from the boat driver. Hablo Engles? "Oh yes, I'm from Rhode Island, my uncle owns this place."
She brought us into a beautiful dinning area with long tables, a magnificent view of the bay, polished floors, very well stocked bar, a massive thatch roof, and a clear wall-free view out to the water. (No mosquitos!! - I could tell you why, but you'll have more fun learning on a night time jungle walk with the staff biologists.)
First order of business was to serve us icy cold beer and amazing fresh fruit, and to listen sympathetically to the long woeful tale of our escape from frigid New Jersey.
Refreshed, we were ready to climb to our room. (Unfortunately this place is NOT handicap friendly, there is a lot of climbing, bring appropriate footgear.) High on top of the hill, yet nestled in the jungle, was our beautiful private cabin with a balcony overlooking the bay with perfect sunsets. The balcony was furnished with chairs, rockers and a hammock for watching said sunsets.
If we never moved from the balcony it would of been an amazing vacation. The Costa Rican Airforce did multiple daily fly-overs (Costa Rica has no airforce, it's their pet name for the large flocks of pelicans that grace their skies). Amazing birds, flowers, plants and a massive iguana who played 'Where's Waldo' with us day after day.. "oh, look! See the tree with yellow flowers? He's on the second branch from the bottom."
Yes, you wake up very early. The birds make sure of that. But no matter how early I rose, there was always fresh hot coffee in a thermous outside my door.
Every day was a new trip. Snorkeling at Cano Island, Corcovado National Forest, Swimming with Dolphins (the dolphins were not that cooperative, but it was a lovely day)and the facinating night time jungle walk with the biologists. We discovered a tiny beach on a 20 minutes walk that could of come right out of Gilligan's Island. We went there several times and had it all to ourselves.
They also have diving and deep sea fishing.. if they catch a good one, it's sushi for everyone that night in the dinning room. Everyone eats together, and shares the story of their day's adventures.
If I had five days to do something GREAT in.. this would be my #1 choice.
Yes, it is expensive, but you get your money's worth
