Scuba Diving in Limón

Located along the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, Limon is a unique province to explore. Unlike from the rest of the country, much of the northern half of Limon remains protected by the Parque Nacional Tortuguero and the Refugio Nacional Barra del Colorado. In Southern Limon, you will find some of the most amazing coral reef in Costa Rica, which is protected inside the Parque Nacional Cahuita. Among the most frequented national parks in the country, the scuba diving is incredible with over 123 species of fish and many coral species found here. Angel queen fish, turtles, barracudas, eels, lobsters, rays, sharks and sea cucumbers are just a few of the many marine creatures you will encounter.

When to Go

From Cahuita all the way to Manzanillo, there are plenty of scuba diving and snorkeling sites to pick and choose from. The underwater visibility here is best when the sea is calm. With a great variety of coral and fauna to discover, the diving here is first class. There are two shipwrecks also worth checking out at Uvita. A good time to go scuba diving in Limon is between February and April, when the weather is good and the ocean conditions are fantastic.

There are plenty of hotels and resorts along the Limon coast, which offer scuba diving and snorkeling as part of their holiday packages. When scuba diving in Limon, look for an accredited dive company with plenty of experience. Also, ask for client references and make sure the company is certified. While out diving, always have your scuba diving gear re-checked and make sure your oxygen tanks are full. Always stay with your dive guide and never go off alone. PADI and NAUI courses are also available for the inexperienced diver.
