| As is the case with almost any real estate transaction, finding a real estate broker is an important step in the process if you’re looking for property in Costa Rica. Of course, many feel a bit of distrust at the prospect of buying property in a foreign country, and while that’s quite normal, there’s no reason to feel that way if you take some basic steps to make sure that you have the right people working for your interests.
Below are just a few basics regarding how you should go about finding a real estate broker in Costa Rica:
Work Your Personal Network: You likely know people whom you trust. When you’re looking for help with anything new, it’s always a good idea to bounce your idea off of those people to see what they think, especially if they have similar experiences. This is certainly true when finding a real estate broker in Costa Rica. If anyone else you know has done this, their insight and experience will be invaluable in helping you find the right help for your needs.
Begin Locally: Many real estate brokers are associated with multinational firms. That being the case, it could be worth some time for you to contact a local real estate agent or broker you already know to find out if referrals are available in Costa Rica. You may be surprised at how many times a broker will get this sort of request, and he or she may have contacts ready to share.
If you get a referral or a list of referrals, you need to do some research. Obviously, the Internet is a good place to start, and you may even want to travel to Costa Rica to meet these people in-person to get a feel for how they do business and what their reputations are in that market. None of this by itself is enough, though, which is why your next step could be critical.
Retain a Reputable Attorney: People by nature are hesitant to contact and retain an attorney, as everyone has heard the horror stories about exorbitant legal fees. However, paying an attorney to work for you could save you much higher and unexpected costs down the road if you wind up with the wrong broker or you encounter problems with the title to the land you want to purchase. The attorney will be able to work with you all the way through the process and to find out if any of the real estate brokers you’re considering have encountered problems in the past. All of this is worth the extra cost, as peace of mind is invaluable.
As you see, the steps you need to take towards finding a real estate broker in Costa Rica are not much different than anywhere else. You need to do your homework and remain vigilant, but if you exercise the proper caution and take nothing for granted, you should be able to find a real estate broker that is a perfect fit for your needs.
