Lying in the verdant North Pacific region of Costa Rica, the Tenorio & Miravalles Volcano area offers various enchanting hiking trails and adventure opportunities. Sitting between the regions of Guatuso and Upala de Alajuela the four volcanic peaks and the twin craters are surrounded by lush cloud forest abundant in fauna and slopes covered with savannah.

Located an estimated 50km from Liberia, surrounded by the verdant jungle and primary forest reserves, the Tenorio & Miravalles Volcano area offers pristine natural environment and breathtaking beauty. The volcanoes offer panoramic views of the San Carlos lowlands, Cano Negro National Reserve, Lake Nicaragua and the Lake Arenal. Secluded and fascinating, the area is off the beaten path yet the road system here is excellent. The mountain tops offer spring-like temperatures and weather remains humid the year round.

The rugged volcanic landscape of Tenorio and its surrounding area is home to a variety of exotic creatures and to a verdant tropical jungle. Sitting right across from Tenorio Volcano is the sister volcano of Miravalles. Famous for having the highest peak in Cordillera de Guanacaste, the dormant volcano of Miravalles offers some amazing geological activity. Hot sulfur springs, steam spewing fishers and bubbling mud pools can be found all around the area.

A recent addition to Costa Rica’s national park system, the Volcan Tenorio National Park is a well-known tourist attraction characterized by its unique blend of distinct volcanic geology and the lush forest teeming with exotic fauna. Providing unique habitats to endangered felines like the ocelots and the jaguars, the protected Tenorio & Miravalles Volcano areas also offer arduous and steep hiking trails for the adventurous at heart. These trails wind through the park, making their way from the cloud forest all the way up to the summit of the Tenorio Volcano. The hiking trails lead you to the breathtaking blue lagoon of Rio Celeste and its incredible waterfall. From here the steep trails will either take you deeper into the virgin forest to Lago Las Dantas or to the steaming hot springs and mud pits.

Horseback tours and nature excursions along with boat rides and rafting trips on Rio Tenorio are also available in the area. Nearby is the small valley of Bijagua, offering some excellent lodging options while the popular beaches of Playa Manzanillo, Playa Flamingo and Playa Conchal lie only a few kilometers from here.
