While Costa Rican cities such as San Jose are a major draw for visitors, many of the country's smaller towns offer travelers a more intimate glimpse into the pura vida lifestyle for which Ticos are famous. The landscape of Costa Rica is rich, and so are the settlements nestled amid the lush rainforests and rolling hills. If you want to really experience what Costa Rica is all about, come with us to explore Naranjo in Alajuela.
A legacy of agricultureNaranjo is one of the most important coffee towns in the province, producing much of the region's supply. The people here work hard, but also know how to have a good time! While Naranjo lacks the fast pace and bustle of cities like San Jose, the tranquil lifestyle here offers tourists a chance to see what Costa Rican life is really all about.
As you'd expect from a coffee town, there's no shortage of places to grab a great-tasting cup of joe. I can't really drink coffee - even a cup of espresso is too big for me! - but the locals and visitors alike assure me that it tastes great. For a mid-morning pick-me-up, head to one of the charming cafes that line the streets of Naranjo for a delicious, freshly prepared cup of coffee. Not only will this give you a little boost so you can keep exploring, you'll also be supporting local farmers!
Take the plungeAs peaceful as Naranjo is, the laid-back pura vida lifestyle isn't for everyone. If you're looking for something a little more exciting from your trip through Alajuela, there are two bungee-jumping companies located right downtown.
If you're the adventurous type, you can take the plunge from the Colorado River Bridge in Naranjo for the ultimate in pulse-pounding excitement. This bridge stretches across the waterway at a height of 265 feet, making it one of the best places to bungee jump in Costa Rica. I don't quite have the nerves for it myself, but it sure looks fun!
Work up an appetiteOf course, jumping headfirst off bridges can be hungry work! For a taste of authentic Costa Rican cuisine, head to Tio Charly's. The chicharrones here at Tio Charly's are famed throughout the area, and this eatery promises some of the best local food you'll find in the entire province.
