The beautiful San Jose de la Montana is perhaps most well known for being the gateway to the stunning Braulio Carrillo National Park and Barva Volcano. However, what many people forget is that this gorgeous tiny mountain village is one of the most amazing places to visit in the entire country. Located on the slopes of the famous Barva Volcano in Heredia province, a few kilometers from the town of Barva, this village is a fabulous getaway to enjoy a completely different side of Costa Rica.
Most people often associate a Costa Rican vacation with beaches or nature reserves, but what many people do not know is that with Costa Rica’s diverse landscape, this country is also home to some breathtaking mountain villages with spectacular views of the valley below. San Jose de la Montana is one such village. Originally renowned for being a health resort, where people came to breathe in the fresh clean mountain air, San Jose de la Montana is now the perfect escape for those who wish to enjoy a peaceful and tranquil holiday alone or with family.
Set amidst a tall evergreen forest, this village is reminiscent of a Swiss mountain town, with its beautiful 18th century wood homes and dramatic landscape. The air up here is crisp and clean, with a variety of hotels, villas, resorts, lodges and accommodations to suit every budget. There are also plenty of restaurants, stores and other facilities and services available here as well.
Besides taking in the wonderful natural beauty of this place, there is plenty to do in San Jose de la Montana. For the active and more outdoorsy person, there are some great hiking and horseback riding trails, while for adventure lovers there are canopy tours on hand to enjoy some truly magnificent views of the valley and its surrounding areas.
Forty-five minutes from the capital city of San Jose, most people usually get to this town by catching a regularly scheduled bus from Barva or Heredia City. If you wish to travel here by yourself, do get proper directions as one can easily get lost. From here, one can also visit the town of Sacramento, which is around 9 km north.
