Founded in 1994, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, specializes in contemporary Central American art and design, while also representing international work in the field. The museum strives to define and promote the most recent dynamics and tendencies in contemporary art and design.

Where is It

The facility, which occupies 1,200 square meters in the National Cultural Center in the capital city of San Jose, includes four exhibition rooms, an auditorium and the Pila de la Melaza, an open-air space for a wide variety of performances and other events.

Additionally, the museum boasts an impressive library, which allows visitors to scroll through a wide range of catalogued art and books which have been produced by the museum itself as well as other institutions.

The permanent collection on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design includes more than 900 works by artists of all ages through a wide range of platforms, including etching, painting, sculpting, photography and video art. Specific selections from this permanent collection are exhibited on a yearly basis in the galleries of the museum.

Emerging Artists

One of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design's principal objectives is to portray the works of artists with visions related to the aesthetic, cultural and social issues affecting the Central American region as well as the rest of the world. The museum also welcomes art competitions, video-creation shows, digital arts and the works of emerging artists, all of which can be viewed by tourists.

To this end, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design hosts a variety of competitions and exhibitions throughout the year in a variety of different artistic fields. Guided tours, conferences, talks and discussions are other ways for visitors to take full advantage of the museum.

Visitors should expect to spend at least a few hours to take in the broad spectrum of art and activities offered at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, which is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
