Playa Guiones, Guanacaste

Located along the stunning coastline of the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Guiones serves as a good surfing destination in Costa Rica.

With 7 kilometers of sugar-white sand and ideal conditions for a variety of activities, this small town is a little slice of paradise in Guanacaste.

In fact, a couple hundred meters of the shoreline received a Blue Flag for its pristine, eco-friendly and well-maintained beaches.

This little-known town doesn't attract a large amount of travelers, making it the perfect tropical destination for those looking for a little R & R.

Don't expect to come here to find a thriving nightlife and lively clubs, as most people who live and travel here prefer a more laid-back environment. Just north of Playa Guiones sits the quaint town of Playa Nosara, which is another under-the-radar destination, and you can enjoy the true Tico way of life in both of these destinations. Both of these locales are steeped in rich culture, both Costa Rican and surf.

The Surf

It's not necessary to be a pro rider to enjoy the surf in Playa Guiones.

In fact, there are a number of schools and instructors for beginners who want to stand up on a board or experienced surfers who just want to perfect their technique. The sandy bottom and uncrowded waters make it a great place for first-timers to learn to surf.

Other activities

Travelers who are weary of getting atop a surfboard can experience the shoreline on two wheels when the tide is low.

At the same time, it's possible to stroll along the entire bay from the north to south end, and travelers may even stumble upon small tide pools that are ideal for relaxing. If it's timed correctly, travelers can explore the beautiful Playa Rosada or Pink Beach.

Nearby attractions

The Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important nesting sites for olive ridley turtles, and is located just 13 kilometers north of Playa Guinoes. This refuge is technically home to Playa Nosara, although it stretches for 248 hectares.

From July to November, with the highest density between August and October, travelers can watch the massive crowds of turtles trek to the shorelines to lay their eggs.

Getting to Playa Guiones

If you are coming from the south such as San Jose head to Samara via the town of Nicoya then north on the coastal road past Garza and it will be before you get to Nosara.

If you are coming from the north you can make your way to Nosara via Santa Cruz and then just go south a bit until you reach Playa Guiones.
