The thought of walking through the clouds thousands of feet above sea level might sound like something out of a dream. But in Costa Rica, these dreams can come true when you visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve!
At the cloud forest reserve, you can hike your way through a 26,000-acre biozone teeming with an incredibly high level of biodiversity. Lush plant growth stretches out as far as the eye can see, and hundreds of species of animals lurk among the trees and bushes. With so much to see, there’s no question that the Monteverde Cloud Forest is a true haven for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts alike.
The reserve is one of the most popular ecotourism destinations in Costa Rica, and also one of the most unique environments in the world. Not only do visitors get the chance to hike through the jungle and take in exotic plants and animals that can’t be seen anywhere else across the globe, they also get to do so while surrounded by the ethereal mist that gives the cloud forest its name.
A True Cloud Forest in Monteverde
While the reserve is called a cloud forest due to its appearance, it’s really mist, not clouds, that forms in the forest. This mist is a result of both the high elevation of 1,600 meters above sea level, as well as the high humidity ever present in the forest. The moisture pools around bushes and the tallest tree branches, forming a cloud-like layer.
The misty cover of the cloud forest helps it stand out from Costa Rica’s other rainforests, and lends itself to the especially high level of biodiversity that can be found in Monteverde. In fact, while the entire country of Costa Rica represents just 0.03 percent of all landmass on the planet, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve houses 2.5 percent of the world’s biodiversity alone!
Where is Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Located?
The park is located in the Monteverde area of the North Puntarenas province on the Continental Divide.
From the nearby town of Santa Elena, the Monteverde Cloud Forest is just six kilometers (3.7 miles) to the east. It’s quite a bit farther from the capital city of San José, the entry point into the country for many international travelers, at approximately150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of the park.
Do know that the park is well-known and there should be no trouble reaching the popular destination. You can rent a car and drive or ride a bus from the San José International Airport (Juan Santamaria) to the town of Monteverde. From the center of town, you will then be only 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) southwest of the park with a normal drive time of under 30 minutes!
The Best Things to Do in and Around the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
Exploring the cloud forest via hiking trails should be your first priority when you visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Alternatively, travel by horse, sky walk, zip-line, or mountain bike. Know that many of the best adventure tours are offered in a nearby forest, not in the Monteverde Cloud Forest itself.
Discovering the Monteverde Cloud Forest
While the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve spans thousands of acres, just a small percentage of the park is accessible to the public via its trails. This ensures that the majority of the region remains untouched so the native species continue to thrive.
The trails in the cloud forest are well-maintained and typically easy to walk, without much need for climbing over uneven terrain. Still, wear a sturdy pair of rainboots, as the ground is usually wet and muddy.
There are nine different trails, covering a total of about 13 kilometers (8 miles). Many of them lead to beautiful vistas, such as the La Ventana overlook, which has an incredible view of the mountain peaks along the Continental Divide.
Main Trail Loop
There are two primary trail loops visitors typically follow when they enter the park. The main trail loop is a bit shorter, and takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the view.
Start by following Sendero Camino, the Road Trail. It’s a wider, well-worn trail with plenty of sunlight, as well as birds and butterflies. Head to the hanging bridge along the path for a great view of the forest canopy below.
Next, follow Sendero Wilford Guindon, the Wilford Guindon Trail, to return to the ranger station at the park entrance. This trail, named after a conservationist and reserve founder, is a little narrower with more dense foliage bordering the path.
The Longer Loop Trail and More Trail Options
If you’re looking for a more challenging half-day hike, the longer trail loop is well worth the effort.
Begin by traversing a dense section of the forest on Sendero Bosque Nuboso, the Cloud Forest Trail. This is a very popular hike due to the gorgeous surroundings, with many orchids and strangler fig plants. It connects to Sendero Brillante, the Shining Trail, which is a bamboo-bordered short path that leads to La Ventana.
The overlook leads to Sendero Pantanoso, the Marshy Trail, which continues to Sendero El Rio, the River Trail, and then eventually back to the park entrance. These trails offer great opportunities for spotting wildlife, and a short path branching off from Sendero El Rio leads to a waterfall.
Other trails in the park include Sendero Chomogo, the highest path through the reserve; Sendero Roble, the Oak Trail, where you can find a grove of heliconia trees; and Sendero George Powell, the George Powell trail, a 10-15 minute hike named after another of the reserve’s founders.

The Stunning Flora & Fauna in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Given the forest’s high levels of biodiversity, it’s no surprise that visitors can find all kinds of plants and animals that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. Many of these unique species are insects, but there are also plenty of reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and birds to be seen as well.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve extends across eight distinct biological zones, which makes it uniquely suitable for housing thousands of flora and fauna species. See everything from huge, towering jungle trees overhead to smaller shrubs and epiphyte plants that grow closer to the forest floor. There are 420 different species of orchids and 200 species of ferns, helping to create the beautiful surroundings bordering the trails and providing a habitat for many species of animals in the forest.

If you’re interested in bird watching, cast your gaze up to the tops of the trees, where you’ll find more than 500 bird species. You’ll want to bring a pair of binoculars and a good camera, especially if you want to catch a glimpse of popular birds like the three-wattled bellbird, the emerald toucanet, and the elusive resplendent quetzal.
Big cats like jaguars and pumas also prowl the jungle. They tend to stay away from humans, but you may be able to take a photograph from a safe distance if you’re lucky.
The many species of monkeys that live in the forest are a little more friendly toward guests at the reserve, often coming to greet you at the entrance, but remember that you should never feed the wildlife.
Additionally, keep your eyes peeled for red-eyed tree frogs, which have become the poster animal for Costa Rica. The extremely rare golden toad is also rumored to be in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the only place where it has ever been found, though the last sighting was back in 1989.
As you hike the trails, be sure to visit the Continental Divide, where you can set one foot on the Caribbean side and the other on the Pacific side of the divide. With incredible views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this experience is one you won’t want to miss!

When is the Reserve Open and What are the Admission Fees?
The park is open daily from 7am until 4pm.
An admission fee is charged to enter the park - $20 for foreigners, $7 for citizens and residents, half-price for kids 6-12 and free for children under 6. Discounts are offered for students with a valid ID. Check directly with the reserve before your trip as entry hours and admission prices are always subject to change.
Skip the Crowds
To experience the sights and sounds of the jungle uninterrupted, you’ll want to avoid big crowds. Consider visiting Costa Rica on a weekday during the wet season so you can explore every inch of the park with less fellow travelers.
Come Prepared
Bring everything you need to have a fun, worry-free day in the reserve so you don’t have to make a supply run.
The humidity is guaranteed to be high in the park which naturally means you’re likely to sweat. With that in mind, water is a must, alongside bug spray, sunscreen, waterproof shoes, and a rain poncho!

The most efficient way to see the park is with the assistance of an experienced tour guide.
Local, knowledgeable guides will highlight the best views, best trails, and the most common spots to find exotic plants and animals! They will also provide background and information about the area and what you are seeing and experiencing during your trip.
You can arrange for a guided hike ahead of time from your hotel or book a guided hike in advance. If you are the last minute type you can just arrive at the park when it opens at 7am and there are usually guides waiting to be hired.
