The Costa Rican town of Liberia may not be as well-known as popular cities like San José or Manuel Antonio. However, thanks in part to its local airport, the Guanacaste Airport, Liberia Costa Rica is actually one of the biggest tourism hubs in the entire country!
Not to be confused with the West African nation of Liberia, this city is located in the North Pacific Coast of the northwestern province of Guanacaste. The area welcomes most of its traffic from international visitors who arrive via Guanacaste Airport (LIR), previously known as the Liberia International Airport. As a result, many peoples’ first impression of Costa Rica is one of a historic, colonial locale with modern developments like churches and a central park.
Liberia is the largest city in Guanacaste, and it’s considered the area’s primary city. It’s located 215 kilometers (134 miles) northwest of Costa Rica’s capital city of San José.
Despite its important role for tourists, many people only stay in Liberia briefly before passing through to other areas of Guanacaste like Papagayo Gulf and Playa Hermosa. It’s primarily known as a gateway city, with easy access to many of the region’s best white sand beaches, rainforests, nature reserves, volcanoes, and more populous cities. There’s also plenty of ways to learn more about the history of the area, starting with Museo de Guanacaste, or the Guanacaste Museum. Here, you’ll find artwork from local and national artists alike, themed around Costa Rica’s abolishment of the military and the effect it’s had on the country. Guanacaste’s Incredible National Parks
There are several national parks in Guanacaste Costa Rica that aren’t far from Liberia. These parks offer great opportunities for viewing wildlife, as well as taking adventure and canopy tours.
The two most notable parks are Santa Rosa National Park and Rincón de la Vieja National Park.
Santa Rosa National Park
Founded in 1971, Santa Rosa National Park is one of the oldest parks in Costa Rica, and well worth a visit. It has local historical significance as the site of the Hacienda Santa Rosa monument, also called La Casona. There’s a museum at the park that serves as a memorial to a peasant army that fought and won against William Walker and his mercenaries.
Santa Rosa National Park includes 12,000 acres of tropical rainforests and swampland, making it a great place to see a diversity of wildlife. There’s also a surf spot called Witches Rock that just might be the best place to surf in all of Costa Rica!
Rincón de la Vieja National Park
The active volcano at Rincón de la Vieja National Park is the park’s biggest draw. Get a great view of the volcano from nearby peaks, or hike to the steam spouts, hot springs, craters, and mud pots that dot the surrounding landscape. Just be sure to check ahead to make sure recent activity or eruptions haven’t blocked some of the trails in the park.
Located about two hours outside Liberia, Rincón de la Vieja National Park is less crowded than Guanacaste’s beaches. It offers plenty of space for horseback riding and hiking down the trails to see rivers and waterfalls hidden away among the tropical rainforest.
Take the Río Celeste-Tenorio Volcano Tour
