Historic Sites

This small town puts travelers in an ideal spot to view some of the country's most historic landmarks, including the Iglesia de San Jose de Orosi, which was built in 1743 and is the oldest church in the country still in use today. The church's whitewashed walls and classic Spanish-colonial architecture are a testament to the long hours and artistic dedication that went into this church's design. While here, be sure to take time to smell the flowers in the onsite garden or take a few pictures of the church against its mountain backdrop. Those visiting the church will find a small museum filled with artifacts and art of the time as well, and is worth examining.

Located about 15 kilometers from Orosi, the Ruins of Ujarras is a must see for any history buff. This is the site of the ruins of Costa Rica's oldest church, which unlike Iglesia de San Jose de Orosi, is not still in use, and it was built in 1693. Tucked between beautiful gardens where many locals tend to enjoy their Sunday afternoons, the ruins document the way of life for the original Costa Rica settlers. Travelers will find local delicacies for sale as well, including elotes and chorreadas.

Natural Attractions

The Reventazon River flows through the town of Orosi as well as the Cachi Lake, which was formed 13,000 years ago. In fact, the river cuts through the town and leads to the lake here. The Reventazon River is known for its rafting options, both scenic and adventurous. Depending on your preference, you can zip through raging rapids past sugar cane fields and tropical forests or calmly float down the river gazing at toucans, Jesus Christ lizards and tanagers. Travelers who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground can visit the magnificent Cachi Dam, or the Presa de Cachi.

South of town lies Tapanti National Park, where three different orchid species have been discovered. In addition to its beautiful flora, the park is also home to a number of gorgeous waterfalls and lush mountainside trails.

Orosi may be a small town, but there is a lot to offer travelers here. Honeymooners, backpackers, families and more can find peace and serenity while learning about the deep rooted history of the country.
