Costa Ballena Area is a new sportfishing spot that has not been is just becoming known for its great fishing. Many well known sport fishermen are starting to fish in these waters and the international community has recognized it as a well know great sportfishing spot.

The South Pacific Area, Ballena Coast where Dominicalito is located, has an enviable geographic position. The infrastructure of docks, airports and good roads have helped these areas to be famous. A short summary about the importance of Costa Rica and its South Pacific Area will explain the advantage to select this area for your next Sport Fishing adventure.

Costa Rica is well known as worldwide Sport Fishing spot for the big concentration of Sail Fish in its waters during the dry season from December to end of May. The reason of the unusual quantity of Sail Fishes is the annual migration of them from deep waters to coastal waters looking for small fishes from the south of the country to the north area. Together with Sail Fishes, there are big schools of Mahi Mahi, Blue and Black Marlins, huge Yellow Fin Tunas and Wahoos all year around. Then, all these species make Costa Rica a Sport Fishing paradise.

The way of the migration of Sail Fish gives us the access to the best fish banks during the first month of the year for the Southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica. That is the reason why the legend ports of Quepos and Golfito, located in this area, have access to famous areas such as Furuno Bank or Caño Island where most of the sport fishing boats arrive. It is usual to find in an area no bigger than 2 miles fifty sport fishing boats in between the big rocks of Furuno Bank.

The port of Quepos is located about 31 nautical miles from the Furuno Bank. It means about 1 ½ hour for a stand boat. Caño Island and other banks around it are difficult to be reached from the boats coming from Quepos and Golfito. The trip to get to this spots can take about 3 hours from both locations. From our place in Dominicalito it takes us only 1 and ½ hours.
