If you are interested in birds or other natural subjects, Villa Lapas is extraordinarily goods. Although the grounds are nicely gardened, the amount of wildlife on or adjacent to the grounds is phenomenal (from someone who has seen lots of wildlife in Costa Rica). A top place for birders. With the recent upgrade of air conditioning, it is even better.
The staff were a delight and exceptionally helpful, even by the high Tico standards. We have stayed three nights each time we have been there, and they have had to drag us away kicking and screaming. I cannot wait to go back.
