| Located at the end of Paseo Colon in La Sabana Park, the Art Museum was formerly the country's main airport terminal. Currently, the museum houses an impressive collection of works across a wide variety of media by some of Costa Rica's most celebrated artists.
Founded in 1977, the museum boasts some of the most important works in the country's history of fine arts. Visitors to the Art Museum can find beautiful works in a variety of styles, illustrating the interpretations and imitations of European movements by local artists.
What to SeeIn addition to a diverse permanent collection of woodcuts, wooden sculptures, 19th and 20th-century paintings and prints, the Art Museum also holds a number of regular temporary exhibits.
On the museum's second floor, visitors can check out the bas-relief walls of the conference room, which depict the country's history from pre-Columbian times all the way to the present with a number of images of the native people. The mural, which was constructed by French sculptor Louis Feron, consists of stucco and bronze patina.
Often, travelers will have the opportunity to experience free concerts in this Salon Dorado (Golden Hall). These concerts are a perfect treat for fans of chamber music.
Collections
The museum's collection includes various works by renowned artists including Jose Sancho, Jorge Jimenez-Deredia, Max Jimenez and Francisco Zuniga. In addition, the Art Museum's outdoor setting is a fantastic place to check out, as it features a sculpture garden behind the building.
Visitors to the museum should expect to spend at least a couple hours wandering through the impressive collections. Many travelers also enjoy a walk through the park, La Sabana Park, which is situated near the museum.
The museum boasts a total collection of more than six thousand works and visitors will be able to better grasp the aesthetic and cultural heritage of the different periods throughout Costa Rican history.
Admission to the Art Museum is free for students and children, while adults can enter without paying on Sundays. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. | |
