Whether you’re in San José for business or pleasure, make the most of your stay by lodging at the Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel, a small inn nestled within the Escazú mountains. Enjoy spectacular views of the three of the country’s 200 volcanoes, or get out and explore all that the city has to offer.

Overview

Enjoy view at Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel
Enjoy view at Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel

Live life on the edge…of three famous volcanoes, that is. When you stay at Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel, which is nestled on a lot within the Escazú Mountains, you will enjoy spectacular views of Irazú, Poás and Barva Volcanoes, three of Costa Rica’s 200 volcano formations that date back to 65 million years ago. Though not active, the volcanoes are certainly a site to see and provide visitors with a thrill before they even start their vacation adventures.

Amazing sites aside, upon your arrival to Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel, you will be greeted by a hot cup of coffee made fresh from Costa Rican coffee beans. If you’re not a coffee drinker, no problem! Enjoy fresh fruit juice from the fruits grown and picked nearby. Enjoy the drink while you check in or take it directly to your room, where you can sip, relax and continue to enjoy the views.

Out of Bounds began as a fully operational tour company that took care of every detail of visitors’ trips, including but not limited to arranging airport pickups, putting together tour packages and helping families and couples alike stay within their budgets while still enjoying all that the San José area has to offer. However, in 2007, the company switched gears (or rather, added a cog) by founding the inn. Complete with five good-sized rooms, the resort is intimate and cozy.

Despite its small size, Out of Bounds has a lot to offer. In addition to being just minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport, it is located in the heart of downtown San Rafael Escazu. Unpack your bags and then take a stroll to Multiplaza International Shopping Mall, Spirogyra Butterfly Garden or one of the city’s many museums, including Gold Museum, Jade Museum or Museum of Costa Rican Art.

If you’re feeling active, schedule a tee-time at one of the three nearby golf-courses, or hit up World Gym, which is walking distance away. Afterward, replenish your energy at one of the local eateries. The hotel is within walking distance of Chinese, Italian, Indian and Peruvian restaurants, each of which offer gourmet fares and delectable delights.

Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel is a popular choice for business people, as it is in close proximity to Cima Hospital, Office Centro and Forum. Visitors can walk to where they need to go or take the bus, as the bus stop is conveniently located right in front of the property. Shuttles to and from the airport and local city centers also stop in front of the hotel. Train stations are nearby.

"I have to make the trip to the Central Valley roughly three times a year, I have been doing this for some years now. My experiences have not always been one's to remember but with OOB the fear of uncertainty has been eliminated. First off service, Miranda and Matteo , they have an eagerness and enthusiasm that is unparalleled in the Central Valley, couple this with a peaceful ambience and the most luxurious bedding, ( truly no expense spared), staying there is quite like a reoccurring mini honeymoon except I am always there for business.
Good breakfast options, service with a smile,well-priced room and tours a plenty (if you have time), all this makes for reliable and enjoybale central valley experience time after time. "

"We recently stayed here two nights on our way into, and then out of, San Jose. Both stays were great experiences. The hotel itself is quiet and feels very secluded and safe, despite being in the middle of a busy city. Our rooms were clean, bright and lovely, with nice hardwood floors, great bedding and an awesome bathroom (including a shower with great water pressure/temperature -- not always the norm during our time in Costa Rica, unfortunately). The view was amazing and there were lots of tables and rocking chairs on the balconies for reading, lounging and absorbing the amazing scenery. The owners were beyond friendly and helpful with our every question/request, and we had a lot of them since we were just basically trying to kill time during our two stays in San Jose. If we ever get back to Costa Rica, we'd stay here again in a heartbeat!"

"Best place to come back to after a day of working, adventuring in the jungle, or sunbathing at the beach. I felt incredibly welcomed from the get-go. I used their tourist adventure services and was just as pleased with those as with my charming bedroom/ bathroom. I plan on staying at Out Of Bounds during future costa rican trips."

"Beautiful rooms and an awesome breakfast (and we stayed at a few places while we were there)!! We really appreciated being met at the airport so we didn't have to try to find our way in the middle of the night. All of the staff was really friendly and had lots of good advice about everything to do with Costa Rica (like a GPS if you are driving).

We would definitely go back!!!"

"Of all my time here in Costa Rica, Out of Bounds was one of the warmest places I have been. The first thing was how easy it was to find. Super easy.
Next was the room. Now we all know that some hotels take pictures and when you arrive you are not in the place you looked at online.
The rooms were perfect. Actually they were even nicer than the pictures! From the hand painted mat in my room to the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. I wanted to stick it in my luggage, but the king size just didnt fit!
Third was Meranda and Mateo. They were the kindest host/ owners. Mateo has a great sense of humor and kept me on my toes! Meranda was so warm and patient with my 500 questions from best local food, casa de laly(sp) to where to shop last minute. If they only had more things I could buy there, i would have bought the whole place up.
I look froward to my next visit to Costa Rica. I dont have a hotel but if they ever come my way, I hope they stay with me.

"Out Of Bounds Lodge is the nicest hotel in this price range in Costa Rica. We have stayed at many many hotels in Costa Rica and many cost more and aren't nearly as good as this one. Out of Bounds Lodge is the perfect place to stay when you're spending any time in the city. They pick you up from the airport and provide the best customer service I've seen. They arrange tours, other hotels, surf lessons, dental appointments, anything you want to do in the entire country. And they make all the booking arrangements for you. The FREE breakfast is amazing! And there is a great restaurant right across the street and many more in the area. The owners are completely bilingual (actually trilingual - english, spanish, italian) so there is never any miscommunication as you may find elsewhere. The rooms are amazingly done, attention to fine details and quality and extremely clean with great showers and hot water. The owners are extremely accommodating and make you feel welcome. The staff is extremely helpful and trustworthy. This was my first stay at Out of Bounds Lodge but every time I go to Costa Rica now, I will be staying there!!"

"We were in Costa Rica for dental and a minor operation a CIMA Hospital. We found this B&B to be the best we have ever visited. The room was clean and quiet. The food was well prepared and the portions were ample. This B&B went out of the way to be helpful. We had a tour booked through them and it was excellent. The Taxi service is very good in that they have the same drivers so that communication problems are eliminated. The shower is the best I've had in all my teavels. The view from the porch is to die for. The local mall is upscale and a short Taxi ride away. The general atmosphere is almost unbelievable. When we left we felt we were leaving friends. "

" Out of Bounds Lodge and B & B was an over-all excellent experience, with two very knowledgable and helpful owner/operators.
My husband and I brought our three young children along with us and we were a little apprehensive about being in a different country with them.
Meranda and Matteo were quick to put our fears to rest by going out of their way to ensure we ALL had the best and safest trip while we were there. They even set up a surpise birthday arrangement, balloons, cake, noise makers(thanks for those) and all for our 5 year old!
Our own transportation was arranged for us while we spent out time in Costa Rica and it was perfect for what we wanted and needed.
They also graciously recommended and helped to arrange the accomodations to another resort close to the ocean, while we were away from the San Jose area. We got to experience wonderful tours that were great to do as a family or just as a couple.
Once arriving in Escazu at the Out of Bounds Lodge and B & B, we were impressed when we found it to be very clean & trendy. A definate touch of class and style throughout their rooms and design of the lodge.
Even though the lodge is seperate from the house, the owners ensured that the service, quality and hospitiality was not jeopardized. We also noted that their premises were very safe and secure. It was nice to have our own space, but to have access to all the amenities they offered us.
We can definately recommend their delicious Costa Rican breakfast on their terrace which sports an amazing view!
Thank you for helping us discover a small piece of Costa Rica! We will recommend you to everyone we know and will be back to see you again!!!

"Upon arriving in San Jose, I hailed a taxi to Out of Bounds...Meranda and Mateo greeted me with open arms...all smiles. They were very accommodating, showing me all around the property, gave me much information on the surroundings(dining, amenities, info on tours as I am the active traveler). The rooms are very inviting, clean and modern with a great view of San Jose. I slept peacefully and felt very safe there. Upon my early rising, I had a drive to the Airport and breakfast waiting for me. I recommend Out of Bounds to anyone, and hope to stay again when I have more time to experience an adventure tour. Thanks again for a great stay! "

"The absolute best experience traveling to date . The personalized shuttle service to the beautiful hotel that is exquisite in decor and cleanliness . A stunning traditional breakfast on the terrace overlooking the spectacular view . A tour local tour in the Mercedes Unimog 404 and then off to the Volcano and a nature tour which ends at the waterfalls that are incredible . The rooms and service are unmatched in our trek across the country . The over the top help in our language barrier crisis and helping us in our departure mix up was a life saver . The staff speak 3 different languages and their intimate knowledge of the country and its attractions kept us busy with our comprehensive itinerary . They offer so many services in house that it make things very comfortable and convenient . This is a unforgetable experience from start to finish .

"An absolute gem of a B&B. We needed a base of ops for a week while house/school hunting, so we were looking for economical comfort in a convenient location (Escazu), with a view, and we didn't want to be locked away in a large hotel/resort where you can't tell what country you are in. Found this beautiful B&B in a web search and booked a room shortly after that - we even got a special rate on the large room with the terrace & Matteo picked us up from the airport. The young couple (she's Canadian & he's Costa Rican ) running the B&B also run various adventure tours and they are some of the warmest & nicest people you'll ever meet and sooo helpful (need to rent a cell phone or car? want to zip line through the forest canopy or free-ride down a volcano? have a thousand questions about getting settled in your new country? No Problem). The B&B they've built is very well done and reflects their great taste and attention to detail: orienting the building at an angle to take in the best views; very tasteful decoration using pieces from local artists; great landscaping; superb quality of the linens & mattresses; rocking chairs on the porches; free wireless; a fantastic terrace overlooking the valley on which to have breakfast & coffee or just sit in the sun. The B&B is also walking distance to some nice restaurants and a little commercial area. About 200m away is a dental office (medical & dental is very good in Costa Rica) so it is also uber convenient for dental tourists. Whether you are on honeymoon, house-hunting, adventure tourism, or medical/dental tourism this is a superb B&B and an excellent value."

"Miranda had organised that I was met at the airport - great not to have to organise a ride when so fatigued. She also quickly informed me that my friends had been delayed due to missed connections and then, gave me a choice of rooms. I took the upper level and it was a good choice. She also gave us the opportunity to stay another night when my friends did arrive or not. Nice to have the choice. The rooms are all very clean, modern, and airy - we did not need to use the air-conditioner. Breakfast was excellent with good choices available - all healthy.
Both Meranda and Matteo were so very helpful with suggestions and advice that it certainly made my stay with them a pleasurable experience."

"Out of Bounds has a cool modern simplicity that reflects the best of Costa Rica. The young owners are avid outdoor people with kayaks hanging on the wall and a vehicle that looks like it could go up the side of a volcano. Secure, clean and high on a hill, it has a stunning view of the night lights of San Jose. Breakfast is served on the sheltered deck- healthy CR or American menu.
Mateo and Miranda are fluent in Spanish and English and happy to help with any aspect of your trip. I would stay there again and recommend it to anyone."

"I make a lot of trips to San Jose and usually stay at the Alta in Santa Ana for the view. Last time I went, they were full so I checked out this B&B just up the road towards Escazu. They have the same view as the Alta, but the rooms were better and the price was a lot less. The room was spotless and the beds were great, and they had a lot of nice little details that make this spot very comfortable... and quiet. They serve a fantastic breakfast and the owners are a nice young couple who went out of their way to make me happy - even after I backed into their security gate and dented it :) Sorry!"
