"I made my reservation on expedia. The price was extremely low and my confirmation did not have the correct information. I called the international travel line to make sure that the vehicle was the correct size and that I had everything needed. After 5 phone calls, I was told that I would also require insurance to rent the car it's a national requirement. I obviously opted for the insurance effectively doubling my bill. Once I arrived the staff told me that I received incorrect information from the international customer service and that I should have called them. My bill was going to double yet again. I was told that I was required to have over $50 insurance per day! At this point I had no other option. It was late and I was with my 2 small children. I am most disturbed by the fact that I was on the phone with customer service so many times and despite asking specifically about insurance requirements they were not effectively represented to me. When I called the company to complain they told me someone would contact me. I got an email stating that I signed the agreement so too bad. This is totally unacceptable. The customer service was horrible. Everything else about CR was lovely with the exception of these people. Very unsatisfied with Alamo San Jose."

"First of all we loved Costa Rica and had a great time. Here is the email sent to Alamo SJO

Dear Alamo,
This is a complaint. My wife and I waited 20-30 minutes while 4 agents took care of 1 reservation for multiple vehicles. We waited patiently. We were excited to get started to La Fortuna. The 4 agents were laughing and talking to the men waiting for the vehicles while one agent punched in the details. Three times I was told it will be just a minute. My wife and I did not feel comfortable or safe at the time. I went with a price quoted with insurance of $435 but was told I had to take the full protection to get a car $685. When I protested I was told that was my only option if I wanted a car. The agent was even upset I brought my own GPS and explained it might not work as well as the ones they had. It worked great. He then asked if I really knew how to drive a stick, I have to say I was insulted the way he asked. He proceeded to tell us that we had to be careful of people giving us a flat to rob us. I stopped him twice and said I knew. I had read about that before hand but my wife didn't need the extra concern. I think we received the worst car in the fleet. I was told that is what I had rented and was available. We should have gone back to the airport at that point but I did not want to give my wife any further stress. As soon as I got to the first gas station we stopped looked at the tires as they felt wrong. They were all under inflated. The front right was 22 Lbs. I am so glad I stopped it was worth the $2 tip to the attendant at the gas station. Do the flats come from an Alamo insider? I have to say this SUV was in bad shape but they noted it on the sheet. I had to stop 5 times at gas stations because the windshield washer did not work. I even used our bottle water once. The back seat was locked in a 3/4 way down position. Just not what I saw everyone else driving while we were down there. The person who checked us out was great and listened to my complaints about the car. He even tried the windshield washer and it did not work. Surprised? Such a great beautiful country and we never felt threatened except at the Alamo pick up. Please feel free to call me if you would like talk. This will be going on trip advisor. "

"This was my first time renting a car in a foreign country. I went online before the trip and researched which company would be best and the basic info i needed to know beforehand. I came to the conclusion that Alamo would be the best to rent from for 2 reasons. 1) I recognize the business from the states and 2) I got a good quote ($33.50 a day for a toyota rav4). I discovered that in Costa Rica they have a mandatory insurance that you must get (BASIC) but that they often try to convince you to get the above and beyond insurance. I learned via the internet not to buy any insurance from expedia, etc because costa rica would not recognize it and you would be out that money. I also learned that the best way to get out of the above and beyond insurance is to go through your AMEX or VISA card (often you get this just for being a member). However, the rental company will still put a $1000 charge on your card that you will get back if no problems, AMEX is aware and fine with it. OK, so all this info i knew about and proceeded to fly to Costa Rica. First, I arrive and the employee pulls up my reservation. He then tells me the price, it is NOT the same as the quote. I ask why, he tells me about the insurance. I tell him i only am willing to pay for the BASIC, I dont wany anything above the mandatory. He tells me that it is impossible and for 45 minutes argues with me. I finally call AMEX and put them on the phone with the Alamo employee, all of a sudden all door are open and i dont have to get the other insurance after all. So frustrating that this employee was playing dumb, acting like he had no idea what i was talking about. Now, problem #2 we got a flat tire second day out (only 5 hours of driving so far). We try to take the tire off only to realize that the "tools" they provide are bent so the angle is all wrong. Without the help of a local with his own set of tools, the tire would have never come off. Problem #3 the spare tire had 2 large bulges that stuck out 1 inch. I knew the moment I saw it that the tire would blow as soon as it hit the smallest rock. Luckily the town we were staying in had another Alamo location and I went there and they responded out to the location and replaced the tire and gave us a new spare. I honestly believe that the only reason we got a flat to begin with is they provided us with a bad tire. So make sure you dont only inspect the rental car but check the tires! Now I am crossing my fingers and hoping AMEX comes through and I dont have to pay for a tire that ALAMO knew was not good."
