Arenal Volcano

Sometimes I come across one of Costa Rica's impressive volcanoes when I'm traveling through the rainforest. These mighty mountains attract tourists from all over the world, who come to see them spew hot ash into the sky. Many of these volcanoes are relatively young, geologically speaking, but that doesn't diminish the spectacle of watching them erupt!

Costa Rica is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area spans several continents and features more than 450 active volcanoes! For a relatively small country, Costa Rica has three main areas of volcanic activity - Guanacaste, the Central Volcanic Range and the Talamanca region. Ricon de la Vieja, Orosi, Miravalles, Tenorio and Arenal volcanoes are located in Guanacaste,  Poas, Barva, Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes are found in the central region, and the Talamanca range has one active volcano, El Viejo.

As I'm fortunate enough to live here year-round, I've seen Arenal Volcano erupt several times. Located in the midst of Arenal National Park, the mountain towers above the jungle, and eruptions are really impressive. I often see tourists marveling at the awesome power of these explosions, especially when the hot ash shoots high up into the air.

Some travelers are braver than I, though, and actually hike up volcanoes like Poas in the central region to see the craters themselves. After taking on a rugged trail, tourists are treated to spectacular panoramas of the surrounding rainforest as well as the sight of the actual volcanic crater at the top of the mountain! What better way could there be to see the majesty of nature?

Speaking of incredible views, Irazu Volcano also offers tourists some amazing photo opportunities. Although the volcano itself hasn't erupted since the 1960s, on a clear day you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from its summit! Even the journey to the top is impressive, with lush greenery and a wide variety of wildlife and exotic plants for visitors to see.

Costa Rica's volcanoes offer tourists an alternative to sunbathing and lounging around on the beach, which is perfect for visitors who like to stay active. Offering travelers stunning displays of nature's power, remarkable views and a great day's hike, touring Costa Rica's volcanic regions could be the ideal vacation for visitors who want to see the awesome majesty of Costa Rica's natural beauty for themselves.
