For a blissful, adults-only experience along Costa Rica’s western coast, the Occidental Papagayo delivers. Formerly known as the Occidental Grand Papagayo, this resort is part of the Barceló Hotel Group. It offers luxurious accommodations in a magnificent tropical setting that you can count among your best vacations.

Travelers have long considered the Gulf of Papagayo the best spot in the Pacific, and the Occidental more than lives up to this standard. Surrounded by lush, green forest and steps away from the ocean, the hotel features spacious rooms that are designed to let in the sunlight and provide for a guest’s every need. Every room has a terrace or balcony with spectacular views of area cliffs and tropical sunsets.

A hotel stay is an all-inclusive package that includes a variety of complimentary pursuits, both on resort grounds and in Guanacaste and Culebra Bay. Guests can join land and ocean activities, including snorkeling, kayaking, volleyball, tennis, archery and more as part of their stay. Optional activities abound with organized tours to Costa Rican landmarks such as the Arenal Volcano and Palo Verde, as well as rainforest and park destinations. Couples can also relax around the resort’s stunning swimming pool, surrounded by beautiful garden areas.

The Occidental Papagayo - Adults Only includes two a la carte restaurants that offer evening meals. The Italian serves up spectacular views of the bay along with Italian cuisine. D’Oriental is an Asian fusion eatery that maintains its theme with teppanyaki tables and tatami rooms. A snack bar offers lighter buffet fare during the day.

U-Spa is the resort’s health and wellness venue, featuring full spa services and a modern gym with cardio and resistance equipment. Enjoy facials, therapeutic massages and more in a soothing environment of gentle music and aromas designed to help you relax. Along with these amenities, the health and wellness center includes a sauna, hot tub, Turkish bath, Vichy shower and private rooms for spa services.

Evening candlelight concerts are a treat, featuring live music three times each week, alternating between violin, saxophone and guitar melodies. Relax and let the balmy air work its magic as you listen to the music. If you want some movement with your music, head to the hotel disco for dancing and cocktails, available until 2 a.m.

"Staff were friendly. View was excellent. Food quality was like Apple Bees or El Torito. They ONLY offer one local beer ( Imperial Light 3.4% alcohol )which it taste like Bud Lights.Their mixed drink was unacceptable. We stayed there 5 nights & we had fruits, salads & ice cream for our lunch & dinner :(.The toilet's seat was broken & you need to flush it 3-4 times to remove #2.The shower pan takes between 3-5 minutes to be drained completely. After 3 days the key to our room stopped working. At the end we got what we paid for.Be sure to take a towel with you. "

"Me & my daughter just went last week October 2010.
We had an all-inclusive vacation and decided this time to go to Costa Rica at the Occidental Allegro Papagayo. What a WONDERFUL vacation. Weather was sunny all week, no rain, and the hotel itself is awesome. Set in the mountains, beautiful setting, had the best room overlooking the pool and the Pacific, heard the birds early in the morning and heard the howler monkeys in the trees. Room was nice, the food at the buffet and the 2 restaurants were soo delicious, absolutely loved it, the fish meals, the huevos rancheros, oh soo good!!, the mixed drinks and the coffee and the fruits juices, soo good!!. Everyone was soo friendly and courteous, and very accomodating. The TAM rep/Edgar at the hotel was soo very nice and managed very hard to get all our tours in, we did one every day. Go to the Arenal volcano tour, and take along some dramamine, cause you can and i did get sick on the bus, roads are very curvy and bumpy, but regardless, i still had and enjoyable time at the hot springs resort. The tour guide took very good care of me and how i felt because i got carsick. The Pacific ocean was wonderful and the black sand beach, everything, everything about this 6-day trip was so wonderful, and i miss Costa Rica already. In all my 55 years, i don't think i ever enjoyed a vacation so much.....
If i can sometime i would surely return and do the hotel and see the same things again, and so enjoy enjoy the food and the people at the Allegro and the Costa Rican people."

"Here is the story: I called the Guest Services "Denis" to prepare my adventure. I was planning to give the Engagement RING to her in this beautifull place. Everything was just PERFECT! They helped me prepare and inmediatelly commited with my proposal.
The crue in the hotel was so special and treated us like we tread a very special guest. We felt the real meaning of "VIP" because they make the magic come true.
They agreed that there are some needs for improve in the food but I am satified with dishes we enjoyed.
The view, rooms and the Wet bar are the things we like the most here. You DEFINITELY should go there. Greetings from Costa Rica!"

"My husband and I made the mistake of going here for our honeymoon, it was awful. We had requested a king sized bed, but were given two seperate beds...for our HONEYMOON. Also the first night we arrived and discovered our air conditioner did not work, as you know Costa Rica is very hot and humid and without air conditioning it was miserable. When we complained to the front desk we were told, that they would "make a note about it",but that all 299 other rooms were full so they couldn't switch us, but if we came back tomorrow at 1:00 they would see if there were any rooms available. The next day at 4:00 we finally got a new room with a king bed and air conditioning, however nothing else improved. The food was terrible all week, of the 3 restuarants they advertised only the Golden Coralesque buffet was open for 3 meals a day, and you had to make reservations for the other two a day in advance and you could only eat there twice a week. We had signed up for the honeymoon package the resort offered on it's own website but were told when we arrived and asked about it, that they didn't know what we were talking about. We made 3 or 4 trips a day up to the front desk to ask about our package, that had cost us 250.00. We were supposed to receive a fruit basket, free laundry service, a couples massage, a beachfront candlelight dinner, a bottle of rum and champagne, breakfast in bed one morning and several other amenities, it was not until Tuesday that the hotel manager finally agreed to give us our package, we had arrived on Friday and were leaving the following friday. Overall it was just a mess and the resort did not care about its patrons or their satisfaction. You had to make reservations a day ahead for everything, food, the beach it was just complicated and not what you want to deal with on vacation. We came expecting to be pampered and catered to, and we were horribly mistaken. I would NEVER go back and NEVER let anyone I know go there."

"My 'husband' and I were married at the Allegro Papagayo resort in February 2006. We paid a decent fee and were initially treated very well, a few things were forgotten such as the wedding cake but we are pretty laid back so didn't raise a stink.

The day before the wedding we were advised we had no photographer, so we had a friend take the photo's and were refunded this portion of our fee.

The lawyer who married us advised we would receive our license in the mail, a year and a half later and we still have no license. We have called monthly, with no reply calls. We have emailed and received back approximately 1 email back for every five we send, from the hotle assistant manager, who incidentally has changed 6 or 7 times since we were there, meaning we have had to resend all info, and re-explain everything to yet another person.

Finally we were recently advised that we might as well just get married here in Canada, and would not receive our certificate even after resending all participants info again.

They gave me the number to the most recent lawyer who advised that she is still in the works of getting things figured out. This has been the most unfortunate and frusterating time of mine and my 'husbands' lives.

To further put salt in our wounds, when I enquired about receiving a refund for the wedding portion of our vacation (but not for our and our 40 guests stays), they quit contacting us completely.

Please do not get married here and experience what we have. This resort would be fine for a rest stop or brief stay/ honeymoon, not for getting married at.

"wonderful scenary, nice beach that could be made more attractive, great van drivers especially Manuel and Gilberto-very kind and caring to people with mobility problems. Friendly helpful staff-use of English could be improved. Bartenders were great especially Alberto in the Lobby Bar which has the best views and breezes in the resort.Rooms were not fancy but satisfactory and cleaned daily. Buffet dining room had a terrific variety of food for every meal of the day. Good wait staff here too. Temperatures were very hot and humid-in the high 90s every day. Pool area was great-had a bar and snack bar. People of all ages were at the resort from very young babies to the elderly who were treated very kindly. Tour group operator Erick providedus with some great sightseeing opportunities and photo ops. His office is near the Lobby Bar All in all an enjoyable, educational experience for the two of us. "
