Located just outside of downtown San Jose, Cariari is a small suburban town inside the province of Heredia with sprawling views of the nearby mountains. Its close proximity to the nation's capital and the largest airport in Costa Rica, Juan Santamaria International Airport, make it an ideal stop if you are starting or finishing your vacation. Cariari doesn't attract travelers in the masses like nearby San Jose, but it is still close to all of the most beloved and visited attractions in the region. From the world-class museums in San Jose to the coffee plantations in the Central Valley, Cariari puts travelers right in the middle of the action without having to be in the midst of the hustle and bustle.

A Place to Tee-Off

Cariari Country Club is a must for any avid golfer traveling to Costa Rica. Founded in 1973, the course was designed by world-famous architect, George Fazio with Bermuda grass and greens. The narrow fairways give golfers a bit of a challenge, especially during the dry season when the wind is high. But the natural scenery of this course is reason enough to visit. Sitting 1,000 meters above sea level, the course features a bevy of flora and fauna, making it one of the most beautiful courses in the country. Beware of the strategically placed sand traps, rivers and sloping fairways.

This beautiful club also features resources for tennis and swimming as well as an on-site gym. You can break a sweat at one of seven indoor courts or five outdoor courts, and even take advantage of the coaching staff.

A Little Retail Therapy

Plaza Real Cariari is a massive shopping center with food, entertainment, department stores, bakeries, cinemas and more. This truly is a one-stop shop for travelers who want to pick up a bathing suit before heading to the beach, some beautiful jewelry before heading back home or gifts for family members and friends. Those traveling with kids should not miss the carrousel, while others can have a great time at one of the clubs.

Get Some R & R

At the Mio Derma Costa Rican spa travelers can treat themselves with a massage, facial or other relaxing treatment. This locale offers a number of different therapeutic massages, ideal for those who have spend their time hiking through the Costa Rican forests. Or it can just be a great way to kick off a vacation.
