The best way to get to La Fortuna is by car, with the chance to see some spectacular scenery along the way. But if you are pressed for time on your vacation, the best way to get here is to catch a domestic flight from San Jose. Nature Air flies exclusively to La Fortuna on a daily basis from the Tobías Bolaños International Airport in Pavas just outside of Downtown San Jose. A roughly 30 minute trip, Nature Air flights are pretty affordable and great to get a glimpse of the Arenal in the distance. However, be warned that in 2000, two small planes crashed because they went too close to the volcano. After this incident the airport was closed until May 2005.
Taxis are easily available outside the airport which is pretty basic in itself. The La Fortuna Airport has a simple office and an open air roof with some tables nearby. If you are boarding a plane from here a US$ 5 local fee is charged at the airport.
