The ultimate in adventure travel, the region of South Puntarenas is the perfect destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Pristine, rugged, and home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, this region of Costa Rica is a must visit for those who want to escape to nature. What makes the region of South Puntarenas such a great adventure travel zone is that it is very remote and cut off from the chaos of city life. Here, you can find the stunning Parque Nacional Corcovado, considered by many to be one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

The Corcovado National Park is the last remaining stretch of Pacific coastal rainforests in Central America. Wild and beautiful, this park has some stunning trails and is the habitat of a plethora of animals including the raucous Scarlet Macaws. Another outstanding park close by is the Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas, known for its superb waterfalls, indigenous flora and amazing wildlife. If you would like to go whale watching, then visit the Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and the Playa Bahia Ballena located just south of Playa Uvita. An important seabird nesting area, this park is also the home to Basilisk lizards and green iguanas.

After your jungle adventure head out to sea, and visit the lovely Isla del Caño, a truly amazing underwater paradise. With some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in Costa Rica, the waters off this island are teeming with a huge array of marine life. For the avid sportfishermen, Golfito and the Drake Bay area offer some wonderful angling opportunities, while if you are big on surfing, Cabo Matapalo, Zancudo and Pavones are the places to visit for surfing in South Puntarenas.

Driving in South Puntarenas is also an adventure as the roads here are mostly plain dirt tracks that tend to get washed away during the rainy season. If you are interested in caving, explore the caverns just outside of Neily, or stay in San Vito to explore the fantastic Wilson Botanical Gardens as well as the Parque Internacional La Amistad.

With plenty of adventure travel companies in the area, South Puntarenas offers some great vacations. Be sure to pick a reputable adventure travel company and ask for a bilingual guide. While these tours can be quite expensive, they are well worth it as they offer a unique experience. Check out our Adventure Travel Listings in South Puntarenas for your dream vacation.
