Palmares is the capital of the canton of the same name in southern Alajuela. Nestled among rolling hills with spectacular views of the Aguacate Mountains, Palmares is an ideal place for tourists to get acquainted with the Pura Vida lifestyle for which Ticos are famous.

The real Costa Rica
With a population of around 31,000, Palmares is the second-largest city in the province of Alajuela. The surrounding countryside provides the city with several natural borders, as the Aguacate Mountains fringe Palmares to the southwest and the Rio Grande runs along the city's northeast and northern limits.

Comprised of seven districts, Palmares was founded in the late 1880s, and was named for the lush palm groves that defined the landscape of the area. Agriculture is an important part of the city's economy, as the rolling hills and humid climate are ideal for growing coffee, a vital export in this part of Costa Rica. As the city draws much of its water supply from the nearby Rio Grande, Mora, Azul and Fierro rivers, the area is also an important center for the rearing of livestock and tobacco crops.

A rich history
In addition to its beautiful scenery and warm climate, Palmares is also known for its churches. The Church of Palmares is a striking building made entirely from stone, a rarity in Costa Rica, and the Church of Zaragoza is considered to be one of the finest traditional Roman Catholic churches in Alajuela.

Palmares is home to an authentic Spanish bullring, where brave matadors test their skills and agility against large bulls in traditional bullfights. The city also boasts a number of beautifully maintained public parks.

Traditional celebrations
Like many other Costa Rican cities, Palmares is renowned for its parades and festivals. In January, the city is united in celebration during the Fiestas, which feature a traditional carnival, and the "Tope," a flamboyant procession of horseback riding that winds through the city streets. During the Fiestas, Ticos in Palmares enjoy locally produced foods and cold beers - an ideal way for tourists to experience a taste of the real Costa Rica! More than 500,000 people line the streets during this massive celebration, making it one of the largest festivals in this part of Costa Rica.
