Located on the plains of Guanacaste province, the town of Cañas lies on the Pan American Highway, a few kilometers west of Tilaran. This area is known as ‘sabanas’ and is often referred to as ‘cowboy country,’ as plenty of cattle raising farms are found around here. Known for its folk dancing and cattle ranches, Cañas is a small town with a unique charm that is all its own.
Lying around a 4-hour drive from the capital city of San Jose, Cañas is a relatively unknown place with few tourists coming here. However, this town is has a number of services and facilities including a few banks, bars, some lovely local restaurants, internet cafes, supermarkets, hotels and a hospital. Cañas itself has no real tourist attractions, but the church here is definitely worth a visit. Unusual in its design, the church’s façade is made of brightly colored mosaic murals.
A convenient place to visit the nearby national parks and reserves, Cañas is also close by to Lake Arenal and the Arenal Volcano. Some other noteworthy places of interest that are a short distance away include, the Corobici River, which is 15 minutes north of town and is an excellent place to take river raft especially for families. A 30-minute drive south of town will take you to the Tempisque River, which has some of the best white water rafting in Costa Rica, and from where you can take a jungle river tour.
Also found close by is the lovely Palo Verde National Park. While over an hour’s drive away are the beautiful beaches of Playas del Coco and Playa Tamarindo. Additionally, do check out the Las Pumas Cat Zoo, which is a reserve for stray or injured wild cats such as jaguarundis, ocelots, marguays, jaguars and cougars.
