For those that want a genuine Costa Rican experience, but need to escape the busy hustle and bustle of San José, Cartago is the answer. Whether this is your home base or just a place where you spend a few days, you’ll find the peace and quiet that you’re looking for. Areas to Visit

There are two popular areas in Cartago that can serve as your accommodations during your stay: Orosi Valley and Turrialba. Orosi Valley is the perfect pick for those that are looking to infuse a rural setting into their Costa Rica vacation. This Cartago town has a concentration of hotels just a few miles southeast of the main city in the province. Though the province, in general, does not offer as many choices for accommodations as other areas, that doesn’t mean that you can’t find luxury. Orosi Valley offers all-inclusive lodges that have all the perks that someone needs when they are looking to relax and just enjoy their surroundings. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back or rustic, you can also find a number of cabanas or cabins available to rent. These options are great for anyone that is traveling on a budget and wants to save their money for one of the many outdoor adventures that Costa Rica offers. No matter where you stay when you visit the Orosi Valley in Costa Rica, you’ll find fresh, clean air and thriving coffee plantations.

Turrialba is east of Cartago city, and it’s the top choice for those that are looking for top-rated white water rafting. That’s not an exaggeration, either; this tiny town has earned the nickname “the white water rafting capital of Costa Rica!” Though small, the town offers a number of hotels that will serve those looking for upscale accommodations, and also those looking for a place to just rest their head for a few hours in between their Costa Rican adventures. The mountain lodges in this area are a good pick for those that want a little more of a modern stay, and more conveniences and service. The budget accommodations are suitable for all travelers, from singles to groups to families. The town even has several sodas where you can grab a quick bite to eat. Or, you can choose to eat at the local Chinese restaurant or bakery. If you’re willing to try to cook yourself, there is a grocery store where you can get your supplies.
