South Puntarenas is one of the most beautiful yet remote areas of Costa Rica. Here nature is at its absolute best, with not many people visiting this part of the country, as the roads here are often simple dirt tracks. Home to the Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park, South Puntarenas also offers the adventurous tourist many stunning remote beaches to explore, while for the avid surfer, there is some superb surfing to be done at Pavones and Cabo Matapalo.
There are not as many restaurants in South Puntarenas like in the rest of the provinces, as much of this region remains wild and untamed. The restaurants that are found here are usually part of a hotel, lodge or resort in the area. Serving both foreign and local cuisine, these restaurants offer a wide range of dishes from chicken and beef to fish and seafood. Vegetarian meals are also available in most restaurants upon request.
As Chinese and Italian cuisine is very popular in Costa Rica, many restaurants in South Puntarenas also serve pizza, pasta and fried rice. Local dishes are also served in many of these places, with rice and beans being the staple food all across the country. Most hotels and lodges in South Puntarenas have all inclusive vacation packages and offer free breakfast, lunch and dinner meals as part of this deal.
There are not many sodas in South Puntarenas; however, you can find many of them in most major towns in the area such as Drake Bay, Puerto Jimenez, Golfito and Playa Zancudo. Serving delicious and affordable meals, these sodas are ideal to eat at if you are traveling on a budget.
