Costa Rica's tropical climate and dense rainforests are the perfect combination for certain life forms thrive - insects. Fortunately, treefrogs like me keep things in check, preserving the delicate balance of the ecosystem in the country's national parks and nature reserves. Still, when you're out exploring the lush jungles of Costa Rica, keep your eyes peeled for some truly fascinating creepy crawlies!
Some of the insects found across Costa Rica are really impressive. The Hercules beetle, for example, can grow up to seven inches in length. Even the larvae of this mighty insect can fill the palm of an adult's hand! Other bugs commonly found here include cicadas, which can also grow to sizes upward of six inches, as well as hundreds of species of butterfly, ant and fly. For amphibians like me, it's like a 24-hour free-for-all buffet!
While some visitors might get a little squeamish around such big insects, these fascinating creatures play a vital role in the rainforest ecosystem by pollinating flowers and serving as a food source for charming treefrogs like yours truly. Some of these bugs are hard to miss, while others are a little more reclusive, so when you're venturing through the forests of Costa Rica, be sure to keep an eye out for these impressive insects!
